A convicted felon who is not allowed to possess guns was expected to be arraigned Thursday in Pierce County after he was shown on a reality show firing off two rifles.

Tyler Richard Smith was featured on the National Geographic show “Doomsday Preppers,” which follows survivalists who are preparing for the apocalypse.

Smith was convicted for first degree theft in 2009. He also has a gross misdemeanor sex offense conviction for communicating with a minor for immoral purposes. The felony conviction makes it illegal for him to possess firearms. But the sheriff’s department says he was featured on the show loading and firing two rifles. The video was shot last year.

While many of the preppers featured on the show talk about how they will protect their family and belongings, Smith reportedly said he planned to go on the offensive by going after other people’s things should there be a societal breakdown.

"Mr. Tyler Smith gained national notoriety for appearing on a television show (National Geographic Channel) describing his plan for ‘marauding’: committing armed robbery when he believed ‘doomsday’ had arrived,” said Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor. “His stated plan was not to defend himself but to use weapons he illegally possessed, to rob his neighbors at gunpoint. Did he really think that this wouldn't attract our attention?"

A sheriff’s department spokesperson also said on Facebook that Smith was practicing residential armed robberies with his family.

Tyler was booked this week on two counts of second degree unlawful possession of a firearm.

Yeah, types like him give everyone a bad name. The felony was for stealing a motorcycle in 2009 and inappropriately touching a 14 year old in a parking lot in 2009. He's registered as a level 1 sex offender.
