I went to see my buddy at the home brew store today. I needed another keg and a case of wine bottles. He met me at the door and said I've got something for you that I think you'll like. He went back behind the counter and pulled out a 1 lb bag of German Spalt hops.
I was pretty astonished, authentic German Spalt hops are next to impossible to obtain. You can find all kinds of variants grown in other places around the world but not German Spalt. All hops are unique to the regions of the world where they are grown. Anyways. My buddy said 1lb of very hard to obtain German Spalt hops for $5.00. He special ordered them for one of his customers but he can't get a hold of him. My buddy said it took 6 months to find this 1 lb bag.

Now I have all 4 of the authentic German Nobble hops. Like all authentic German nobble hops the alpha acid is very low, which makes them smooth and subtle. Not a hop explosion in your sinus cavity or the back of your throat.
Still hard to believe I have 16 ounces of these hops to play around with.

Hop Profile: Spalt
Spalt, also called Spalter Spalt, comes from the Saaz hop family. Much like its German Tettnanger and Saaz brothers, Spalt is also a noble hop with a low co-humolone content. What makes Spalt hops so special are its essential oils, like farmesene, which aren't found in many other hop varieties...
