Hi all...I've been canning some quart jars of chicken in broth. How long can i expect them to last, stored on cool, dark basement shelves..I've read from 1yr to 3yr, can those here who have canned chicken, share their experience.? Taste, shelf life, etc...thanks, Kevin

sorry Duppy
never did this--have no info for you---but you read that it was 1 to 3 years. great value for your canning efforts. And what a convenience when needed for a meal!

I have done it and have kept canned chicken for two years without a problem.

I try to keep it no longer than a year, however. ROTATE those jars!

Just be sure the jar is kept dry and has no rust on the lid. When you open the can make sure the seal was tight and you get a good pop as air goes in. Then check the contents by smelling. It should smell like what it is (chicken smells like chicken etc..) Finally be sure to heat the meat or broth for at least 20 minutes at a boil before using to be double sure of safety.

Good question, and great answer. I was wonder this myself, although I'm sure mine won't last very long around here, LOL

I love love love canned chicken...
so long as you have processed correctly,
and the seal has remained intact...
I see no difference between 1 and 3 years...
this year...after my old old presto once again needed a gassket...then the guage..went...
i managed to convince my hubby...to get me an all american...
dosen't even make it to storage...I can..almost anything you can think of...
this last year...we moved from city to county...when we go back for the weekend
first...i realllly don\t miss the traffic....
and second....the amazing amount of time wasted in line ups traffic..jams..ect...
I am quite happy...to put my effort into self sufficiency....
is so incredibly rewarding...pulling out a well canned jar...
:plbb :drool :tongue
