I have very hard water. I have a five gallon bucket of salt....it was among my free buckets of wheat and I opened it without reading the label first, thinking it was more wheat. I got to thinking...maybe I can use it in my washing machine and in my dishwasher to boost the washing power by softening the water. But I have NO clue as to what amounts to use or even if it would be worthwhile. Any ideas?

I also accidentally opened a bucket of baking soda, which I will use for cleaning and maybe will bake some into washing soda next time I need some for making laundry soap. This is also available for softening water if it would be useful.

I hope someone says soon cuz my water is super hard and makes the clothes a bit dingy. And it seems that someone on here mentioned putting salt in to help soften and clean better.

I added salt to my homemade laundry soap. It did help a bit.
