Walnut, Black (Juglans nigra)

Parts Used: the nut hulls

Cosmetic Properties and Uses: A walnut infusion is very astringent. Simmer hulls in water to produce a dark brown liquid that can be used as a rinse to brighten or add a hint of red to black or brunette hair. Can be used to darken light-colored hair. Use only if you have oily to normal scalp and hair. A walnut-hull infusion will not radically darken hair or penetrate the cuticle as a chemical dye does. It will temporarily stain blonde, reddish-blonde, or light brown hair a darker shade. This color will fade after a few shampoos unless you are a chemical blonde, in which case the infusion may react unpleasantly with the unnatural color of your hair. Be aware of this potential chemical reaction.

Contraindications: Avoid use on dry scalp or dry, damaged hair, as it may cause further dehydration and dryness. A walnut hull infusion will stain hands, nails, and light colored towels a light shade of brown. Take the proper precautions when using this dark liquid.

Rinse To Darken Grey Hair

The more porous your hair, the more quickly this rinse will stain the hair strands. Remember, however, this is not a chemical color, so it will not penetrate the hairs cuticle like a semi-permanent or permanent color. Thick, coarse hair will be quite resistant to taking any herbal color. Some grey hair may turn light brown, dark blonde, or medium to dark brown. Avoid this rinse if your hair is truly white.

Prep time: 4 hours; Yield approximately 7 to 8 cups

8 cups distilled water
1 cup black walnut hulls, crushed
1/2 cup nettle
1/2 cup rosemary
1/2 cup sage
2 T regular loose black tea (2 tea bags will do)
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar, raw or processed
2 tsp jojoba, almond, coconut, or extra virgin olive base oil
Rubber or latex gloves

In a large pot, bring the water to a boil and remove from heat. Add herbs and vinegar, cover, and steep for 3 to 4 hours. Liquid should be deep brown in color. Strain and add the base oil. Stir vigorously to blend and pour into storage container(s). Shake before use. Use daily for 2 weeks, then every other day or as desired. Follow with good quality leave-in conditioner. Refrigerate any left over for no longer than 2 weeks, then discard.
