I am growing several boxes of potatoes, the problem is this,

I don't have a lot of compost readily available at this time, and my bags of peat moss aren't going really far as I try to keep covering my plants, mounding the dirt higher (while they plants taller and taller)

any ideas on cheap growing medium for potatoes in boxes?

thanks so much?

I think I read that you can use straw or some type of mulch. The object, from what I gather,(I haven't done potatoes yet) is to keep the tubers frorm coming into contact with light, which turns the spuds green, and that is not good.
