Most chainsaws and weedwhackers, and some small water pumps, motorscooters, and other common equipment have 2-cycle (or "2-stroke") gasoline engines. (They're the motors that make a kind of whining high-rev sound.)

One of the most common problem areas (if not the most common) is the carburetor.

Here's the best learning tool I've ever come across for learning to rebuild the 2-cycle carburetor. You buy a kit (fairly inexpensive) of small parts, and use a few common tools.

odd_duck99 has recently inquired here about a carburetor problem with a Homelite weedwhacker. Apparently, the problem was solved with a simple adjustment of the fuel jets on the carb. If the problem had its basis in something beyond that, then this video might have been the ticket.

Another problem that can occur with two-stroke engines is carbon build-up in the exhaust port. This can cause symptoms that seem similar to a carburetor problem, except the cause is at the other end of the combustion cycle! The effect is, the machine won't have normal power and may not accelerate normally.

Here's an excellent vid that explains the problem and takes you through the carbon cleaning process:

Fantastic stuff, thanks for posting!

I LOVE these DIY fix videos. Some of them are really incredible! Reminds me of my best experience ever with repairing something using a video like this: http://www.sufficientself.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3154
Yeah, you posted links to some really useful vids on that thread, Nifty.

There are already quite a lot of good technical vids out there. Of course, there are still many specific topics not yet covered. Some of the people who post to Youtube - and I mean experts - are open to suggestions about what topic to do upcoming vids about. It can be worth it to give them a suggestion.

I've learned skills & knowledge in numerous ways - direct example (in-person from someone who knows how to do something); book or magazine explanations; videos. Some people have told me that they can't learn well from vids, etc. Different folks have different learning styles. We opened up a discussion about that on this thread:
