Why do chickens sit in the nesting box when they have no intention of laying an egg? :he

Cause its a comfortable place to rest and they can catch up on the barnyard gossip? Or so they can appear to be laying eggs so they won't get canned? :D

Mostly I think its because its what they are programmed to do, whether they poop out an egg or not! ;)

Mine used to do that, too. I would stand and watch them for 1/2 hour at a time . . . nothing.

Then, one day . . . thunk. I actually got to see my first ever egg layed.

Hang in there!!

Once there was a hen in the nest box, squatted over. I could tell she was about to pop one out, so I just stuck my hand under and it landed right in my hand. Talk about fresh from the chicken. ;)

They are bashful - did you want an audience when you gave birth?

I used to sit in the hen house and chat with the Ladies in the nest boxes - okay I admit I sang to them too  - I found they are less bashful if you hide the camera until the very last minute. Once they are in the midst of contractions, they have to continue and you can take the picture.... ;)

I think a couple of mine camp out in the nestboxes as much to avoid the rooster jumpin' up and down on 'em all the time as anything :p

You could have something there, Pat! I currently have 6 roos....yes, six! Four of which are juveniles and feeling their oats.....my poor girls are not a bit happy. :( I wouldn't blame them one bit to hide out in the nests!

Saturday is killin' day.......... ;)

Good theories except I haven't killed a hen and I don't have any roosters.

I keep thinking of the old bathroom wall ditty...

Here I sit all broke hearted
Came to Sh*t
But only farted
