Oh, I wouldn't call it a scandal. I read more about the claim, and I doubt there is evidence that would pin the dog's symptoms on the dog food. Only if they can prove there was a contamination or something in specific lot numbers or manufacture dates.

It took millions of complaints with vet-verification over years to get a recall of the "china jerky treats". This suit is over three dogs... from the same household... while thousands of dogs are eating the same food every day. It's worth noting that the owner had recently switched dog foods - and that GI upset is common when a dog is fed a restricted (one type of food) diet and abruptly switched to another.

It's difficult to stay within the safe ranges of nutritional requirements for dogs with a homemade food. It can be done with a lot of work and math (and I love doing it!). We tend to forget that nutritional excesses are more dangerous than nutritional deficiencies. More is not always better!

And no, I'm not doing the math on dog treats. They're TREATS, the "junkier" they are the better treat they are. ;) Not one to get all orthorexic about what the dog eats.

We make dog treats every weekend, alongside the bread baking. Our recipe is a little different- we use chopped peanuts rather than peanut butter, and if I have some I will use bone broth instead of plain water. The dough also has a bit of sourdough added and we let it ferment overnight; I feel the flour is a little more digestible that way. I know we never had trouble with dog farts on the diet we fed our dogs in the past; our vet has convinced me to use a commercial Large Breed Puppy formula for at least Millie's first 2 years and now She has killer farts:sick. I'm going to try a different company's formula on the next bag to see if it gets better.
