I agree with a .22 and a good shotgun, those are about the minimum I'd go with. A heavier rifle if you're hunting deer or I guess hogs *never hunted hogs so I really don't know* and other things larger than varmit sized.
Now, for more personal defense and just plain fun, the whole world of handguns opens up.................
