I have a Lodi, which ripens the first week of August. It's a soft apple, good for sauce. I also have a Harlson and a Winesap, which don't ripen until November. I'd like to plant another apple tree that would ripen sometime in September-October to fill in the gap. Does anyone know of a variety that would work for this?

Do you know how many Winter Chilling Hours you get? You can find out from the local extension service. They will also recommend varieties for your area that are likely to be patented and other modern varieties.

If you want heirloom varieties, just find out your hours and what diseases are more likely so you can look for types that handle that well.

Old garden books are valuable for telling about which old varieties worked where. They also told which problems they had or resisted well usually.

Old garden books sounds like a good place to look. I guess a trip to the library is in order. Thanks!
