I would change Nifty Notions to Frugal Housekeeping. IMO, Nifty Notions would make me think sewing and crafts. And under Livestock, I would suggest breaking it down into specific animals. I also suggest Canning/Preserving, since that is a different animal than Home Cookin.

I'd like an alternative cooking section....something like summer kitchens which discusses solar cooking, dutch oven cooking, that sort of thing.

You mean Wildcrafting? Gathering ginseng, medicinal herbs, edible wild greens, fruits, nuts, etc.

Isn't this so fun? I think Beekeeping is a must, though, for any self-sufficient homesteader....I can't wait to get mine next spring! No more buying sugar! I'll know just what is in my sweetener, salves, lip balms, candles, bread, and other things I can make with all the end products!

Get them quick, prices are going up on bees, unless you can catch a swarm, and you'll still be buying sugar for another year, plus you have to buy sugar to feed the bees.

I don't know, should we keep the livestock section over at BYC? Since there is so much crossover, this could turn into the spill over site... no offense intended - my coffee hasn't kicked in to help with brainstorming yet....hmm maybe there should be a livestock section over here, otherwise we would constantly be referring people back over there even if they weren't interested in chickens... hmmm. *shrug* more coffee....

I have looked in area, and most around here lost hives, or were not planning to sell, let alone give away. Never thought to look online Next thing you'll be telling me there are chicken places online too.

Hi,
I agree with the list of categories wholeheartedly and I would love to get into bee keeping so I hope that gets in there. I have been online researching it but it would be great to be able to have people to talk to about it.
I garden, I have been canning and dehydrating fruits and veggies all week, make my own yogurt and just started making my own cheese and of course I keep chickens.
These are areas I woudn't be totally lost in
I love the frugal ideas and think that would be great.
I recently started making my own laundry soap and fabric softener and I can't believe how much money I will save.
(washing laundry for my size family is normally expensive)
I look forward to learning and contributing to this site.

*sigh*. I wish I could keep bees. But I am highly, highly allergic. Even after a shot of epinephrine I only 15-20 minutes to get massive doses of steroids and antihistamines by IV to avoid anaphylactic shock.
