My DGD works @wallyworld and has purchased practically every type, shape & color they got in?!! Who knew she had such attraction to them! her mom and I are just shakin g our heads in disbelief. Both of us decided we would save seeds and have a huge pumpkin patch next yr. My goats and chickens will be happy! Maybe DGD. 😁

There is this type of pumpkin that the old-timers used to use locally. It wasn’t that pretty orange color that is traditionally used in jack-o’-lanterns. It’s something that I used to see when I was a little girl growing up. All the old farmers had it it was very pale. I would like to find it because sometimes it’s in high demand especially from older people. It’s very meaty. If I can figure a way to control the grass and weeds in the orchard I can double dip and have a huge pumpkin patch. Not sure if I can really sell them though. I would need to find out how many locals really care to cook it. But I imagine pumpkin is on clearance everywhere now.

A friend of mine planted pumpkins and sold out. She did well $$$ with them.
My neighbor sowed 5 acres of pumpkins (the carving type) he spayed them every week for bugs. I never seen a pumpkin patch so big. I asked him if he would mind if I went and got two for my granddaughters. He said I have only one rule, you must take a minimum of 5, no less. He put the biggest ones on a wood sided hay wagon and pulled it into town with his pickup. His daughters (5 & 7) sold every last one of them at the town fall festival. The smaller ones got left in the field for wild life to eat over winter. Cutting them loose from the vine with large bolt cutters was the hardest part. I walked out quite a few from the field and stacked on the wagon for my five, it was a good workout.

There is a good market for pumpkins, indian corn and corn stalks around here. Fall yard decorations I guess. I see a lot of people decorate their driveways for fall.

are you talking about butternut squash? those are kinda pale colored and are pretty popular (personally i don't like them and prefer buttercup or kabochas instead).

No. What I am after is actually a pumpkin. DH has a butternut squash plant in his backyard. I like squash too. We’d have to figure another way to control the weeds and grass to allow for the growing days. I was toying with the idea of bringing the wood chipper to the orchard after one last bush hog. Maybe if I mulch with 5 inches of wood chips most of the grass won’t grow.
I can’t drink my coffee in peace because DH is suffering from his new problem and I hear him. I don’t think I we will wait until the 15th to go back to the surgeon. He mustn’t have latched some of the rabbits right. I found a black rabbit on the floor of the porch eating pellets from a canister. But the other 3 rabbits stayed in the still opened cage 🤦‍♀️. I latched and then caught Blackie (fortunately she is used to cages and humans) and put her back in. All before coffee.
Dumpster diving continues. Tom found a goldmine behind a printing company. They were throwing out 4X8 double sided vinyl sheets and several rolls of vinyl. I am wondering if we can add grommets and use on the greenhouse. It does allow filtered light in. Not sure how durable. They were throwing away caps that didn’t yet have logos sewn on. Figure my DIL can use them for her sideline. She designs t-shirts.

DS is a sergeant in the Army and married since February with a 2 month old baby girl. He also has two stepkids that are still very little. Well it has come to my attention that money is too tight. DIL is not at all used to my lifestyle and DS is extremely stressed because he is normally very frugal. I have therefore communicated with DIL about some of my favorite reads...Possum Living and Back to Basics which I have ordered and will send to the Fort for her/them to consider. I also sent some books for the oldest child to hook him. Never too young to learn to farm.

Hope you find THAT pumpkin....was it actually orange, just very pale? I've got seed for grey, white. Spotted. Striped. Bumpy. Big and small! Yep. Next year imma selling pumpkin! Probably indian corn. Too. Any left overs, animal feed.

We do have a good market for those things close by, in the towns.
