A lot of us are on both sites. Lots of chickens, lots of goats and a few OLD mini horses here. 🥰. But I love self sufficient living, so here, too.

Welcome from coastal VA

Welcome from the western part of Va. I am on BYH and SS and check out TEG some. I went on BYC but got a little tired of the ones with all these different chickens that weren't really what they said... I have raised and shown many different ones over 50 years and prefer for them to either be purebreds... or be crosses without fancy names.... plus my birds are also practical and have to earn their living... Am back into a few and looking to get more again as I am getting around better after several replacement surgeries...
Your silkie is cute... My sister had a little white leghorn bantam pullet when she was 5-6 yrs old from an egg that a very prominent breeder back then, gave her to hatch.... had a little cat harness she put on her and walked her all around the poultry shows... she lived in the coop but got special privileges.....
And your son is more adorable....

Have you been to the ameraucana thread? I look every now and then but dang is it tiring with people calling their mutt easter eggers as ameraucana. Then they get mad when you tell them they were not sold ameraucana. I blame hatcheries with a lot of that.

I only have one ameraucana left. Rest are EEs. Many are part silkie.

That is why my visits there were very short-lived... got tired of people with "mutt chickens" telling me they were this or that and then when I referred them to the Standard of Perfection... they got very put out and I just cut my participation there right off...
There is NOTHING WRONG with mutt and cross breed chickens.... have had lots of them and when I was running over 150 hens as pastured layers, had anything that was laying... But don't tell me they are such and such just because a hatchery gave them a "name" ....because they are just mutts. Breeds will breed true... sure there is not a "perfect" chicken... that is why we have the Standard to try to breed them to "perfect".... and why we cull and eat alot of birds and show and breed from the best.
And to hear all the ones that spend a kings ransom on their birds is just beyond my comprehension of practical and sustainable. I take very good care of my chickens.... and they are chickens... not children. Same as for our cattle and all.... There are limits to what is sensible and practical to do for an ANIMAL....
So I just stay off there... better for my sanity.

All the mixed color silkies and people insisting they are some mde up color name, or something that doesn't look partridge/grey called partridge/grey because they are the only sexual dimorphic colors. Gold vs silver based is difference between them. Don't get me started on "Calico" which are just very badly bred and leaky splash usually.

Some newer colors are out there and many people are working hard on them so they will be accepted into the Standard. Like Paint and Blue Cream (aka porcelain which APA disallowed as a name because the silkie color has no relation to actual porcelain color).
