You all don’t just store your rice in the freezer?

no, we don't use the freezer for those sorts of things, nuts yes, rice, flour, bulk items no, because we use the freezer for storing food portions from things we make once in a while. meals ready to go after they thaw out or get warmed up in the microwave. the closest i get to bulk items in the freezer is beans that are cooked and then drained and frozen in quart jars. those are very handy for all sorts of uses.

in recent years i hardly eat rice. it's not something in the plain white form that appeals to me that often. i'd rather eat tapioca if i'm looking for a starchy dessert.

The new leadership is now in place for the volunteer gig. This is going to be a good thing with new blood, new relationships with new communities.

I am still part of the 4 person executive leadership team and things are becoming more collaborative.

Decades of the same old same old out the door. Getting motivated again

Wife and I visited my son in his new apartment and had dinner with him and his girlfriend yesterday.
Spent a good deal of time talking about canning this summer. He was asking a lot of good questions. He evidently got a bunch of his maternal grandmother's canning stuff?
He wants canned potatoes.

All three kids have now expressed interest in canning this summer, but all different stuff. Can't wait!!!

Yay! It's great when they start to "get it." Mine aren't to the canning stage yet, but they are at least stocking up. Baby steps I guess....

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
You planted the seeds in their childhood and it’s been growing while they weren’t even looking. It’s great that your kids are now wanting to learn what you put in front of them, you sure are a good example for them to follow.

having grown up always helping and doing meant it was a part of the routine and we still enjoy it each season all these years later. i'm always thankful for knowing how to cook and can but also for everything else that Mom has taught me.

yesterday Mom wanted to sew up her mittens that were developing holes, but she can't see well enough to thread a needle so i did that for her and then i got her started and she asked me how i learned a trick (putting the needle through the tied off thread so that you don't have to tie a knot to start it) and i said that i just thought of it sometime many years ago when stitching up and patching holes in jeans. so she was impressed by that and we got a good laugh out of it all.

i'd just thrown some holey socks in the trash so we had to take one of those and cut some of it off to help mend a hole in her mitten. just simple stuff and making do, but i also mentioned that she should use other mittens for shovelling because the ones she tore up are really not meant for heavy sorts of work like that.
