I'm really just wondering how & why are they in that van :lol: I can see they're lounging...in a very unusual place.
I know this sounds crazy and all but some people do raise deer for meat. We looked at buying such a place, the guy had 8 foot tall fence to keep deer IN. Don't ask me, they are so abundant in the wild. why anyone would want to raise them is beyond me.

likely there are state regulations and also i think it makes a lot of sense that you would not want a domestic herd mixing with the wild herds (diseases and ticks being two which immediately come to mind).

Bingo. Disease issues like CWD. High fence deer have caused it to spread more with high density population

Last I checked a few years ago there was no CDW around here. Deer are thick here too, they really should issue more tags. They have populated to the point of becoming a nuisance. I believe it was Thursday evening I was sitting in a lawn chair and a very big doe just came walking up the driveway. I watched her and when I felt she got close enough, I clapped my hands and shouted HEY at the same time. She darted off, which was my aim (no phun intended). She's probably the one who has been eating roses. I do like deer meat, but removing all that silver skin is a lot of work. It's lean meat also, it needs some help when cooking. I have to admit it's hard beating a deer meat omelet for breakfast though 😋

For restaurants that serve venison they have to have a steady INSPECTED supply of meat they can count on. Raising deer for meat is the same as raising any type of livestock for meat... there has to be a market. The tall fences are to keep the diseased animals... with ticks and such... OUT of the more controlled conditions of the "farm raised venison"...and to keep the animals in so that they do not breed with the wild population. CWD is a problem here in parts of VA.... and they will no longer issue any permits for raising deer in "captivity".. Besides, they do not raise white tails for the venison market as a rule... they raise "red deer" or Fallow deer, and they have some health issues that did not need to be allowed to get into the wild population. A friend raised fallow deer for several years and did pretty good but deer inside an enclosed area have their own sets of problems...

I agree that there is a growing population of deer... here it is white tail.... and they are becoming a menace. Hunting tag numbers have been increased here and we encourage all that hunt on our farm(s) ... BUT they are allowed 1 buck... and then HAVE to take does because we are so over run with deer numbers here. That is our rules on the farms, I think that tags are issued for 2 bucks and 3 does total??? Have not kept up with the numbers since we shoot as many as we can between the several that hunt on the farms. As owners we are allowed to hunt and do not have to have them tagged and we take advantage of it. If the numbers were scarecer, we would not push for so many to be harvested.

I really like venison stew... and will mix ground venison with beef on occasion... always keep some beef and pork fat in the freezer to use to add to the lean venison burger.

they're always around here and way more than the hunters are getting. i had hopes that last hunting season the guy who asked if he could hunt on our land (because we always have them coming through) would actually get some of them but he was going for a trophy buck and didn't take any at all.


I really like venison stew... and will mix ground venison with beef on occasion... always keep some beef and pork fat in the freezer to use to add to the lean venison burger.

i just don't want to mess with the guns or cleaning of them, but if someone else wants to come and hunt them here they're welcome.
