Goats

I hope it's just shedding too! If not - here's some basic info:

Common Causes for Itchy Goats with Hair Loss:
  • Mites (Mange): Sarcoptic or Chorioptic mites are the most common cause of intense itching, causing scabs, raw areas, and hair loss on the legs, tail base, or face.
  • Lice: Both biting and sucking lice cause constant itching and scratching.
  • Ringworm: A fungal infection resulting in patchy, circular hair loss with crusty/scaly skin.
  • Zinc Deficiency: Causes hair loss (often around eyes, ears, and nose) and thickened, scaly skin.
  • Environmental/Seasonal Shedding: Rubbing against fences to remove winter coats can cause patchy hair loss. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]
Diagnostic and Treatment Steps:
  1. Isolate: Separate affected goats from the herd to prevent spreading, particularly for ringworm or mites.
  2. Inspect: Closely examine the skin for lice (visible to the eye) or mites (requires skin scraping by a vet).
  3. Treat Parasites: Use injectable or pour-on treatments like Ivermectin (for mites/sucking lice) or permethrin-based products (for biting lice/keds). A second treatment is usually necessary, often 10–14 days later, to kill newly hatched parasites.
  4. Treat Fungi: Use topical antifungal treatments, such as diluted iodine or chlorhexidine, for ringworm.
  5. Supplement Minerals: Ensure goats have free-choice, high-quality loose goat minerals to prevent deficiencies.
  6. Clean Environment: Clean barns and bedding to eliminate mites that can survive in the environment. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
You can part the hair on top of the withers or the head and often times see lice. Mites are more microscopic. There are several different products that are effective against lice. I've had good luck using a powder called Python Dust. Most farm stores carry it. There are plenty of other treatments you can use. Some liquid pour-ons are available too. A simple Google search should give you options.

Good luck!
