How to get away from Ziplock baggies?

http://www.reusablebags.com/ is a good source of alternative, reuable bags if you're trying to cut down on your use of plastics. Just type in "sandwich bags" and you'll get all their lunch/sandwich options. I've been really happy with the produce bags I bought through them to help from having to...

    Thermostat--your winter LOW

We keep ours at 60-63 during the day and off at night. We've installed a woodburning stove, cannot wait to see how much we can get away without having the heat on at all this winter! :)

    Home made yogurt...

My kids LOVE yogurt. I usually stir in a bit of our homemade fruit jams/jellies/butters. Just in case anyone wanders here who doesn't already make their own, I thought I'd add a couple of links. Here's how to make yogurt with the jar/cooler method...

buying a cow or shares for meat

http://realmilk.com may be another place to look. Our small, local organic dairy sells beef, pork and chicken along with their raw milk shares. So if you haven't had any luck at the other wonderful sites mentioned, you may get lucky with a dairy. Another thing to look closely at are your local...

    From the Outside Looking in

I just want to say thanks you guys, and you surprise me. I fully expected this to be an ugly thread, which is why I have not been back since starting it. I guess I didn't give you as much credit as I should have. I've really enjoyed reading through this thread and the opinions expressed here. I...

    From the Outside Looking in

I have to say, I feel like an outsider. I can see how many of you feel like a nice little close knit community. It sure looks that way. In many ways it's my own fault, in that I think I come here to the forums (BYC and SS) looking for something different than most. To me it's a way to those of...

    We got bad news today.....

So sorry to hear that, and our thoughts are with you. I just wanted to say thank you for bringing your experiences out on the table and hopefully helping more people get the testing done they needed.

    Home made kitty litter

"swheat scoop" works good, but is expensive. It's supposed to be made from wheat. I wonder if other grains, or objects of similar shape and size would work?

    Butchering day...yech! (Warning: Graphic description!)

My dad likes this method. They don't "pass out" per se....it's more like a calming trance. And once the head is chopped off, there will still be flopping.

    Does anyone here raise turkeys?

Then I would think the standard bronze would work wonderfully for you since you don't have to worry about the leg and health issues of the Broad Breasted type. Oh, and yes, you can eat turkey eggs. I hear they're delicious! :) Here's a link to the standard bronze...

    Does anyone here raise turkeys?

Are they standard bronze or broad breasted bronze? Both are fine, it just depends what your goals are in raising turkeys. If you want a backyard breeder flock, than you want the standard bronze. If your intent is to raise meat for the season, then the Broad breasted bronze is your bird. The BB...

    Does anyone here raise turkeys?

This is my first year raising Narragansetts. We free-range ours with our chickens and ducks, but they all have separate coops and runs. They all get along fine while on range, and I only had one turkey who got to be a bit if a bully with the chickens, but he soon calmed down and the chickens are...

    Butchering day...yech! (Warning: Graphic description!)

Thanks for sharing this beekissed. I've read a lot of contradictory stuff on pithing over at BYC. Yet even when it's done perfectly and properly, it strikes me more as a way to render a bird less combative than an actual killing method. Perhaps used more as way to make the job easier for us to...

Need a REALLY SIMPLE bread recipe please

I didn't know how to make bread by hand until last winter. Before that I always made LEAD! Here's a basic recipe that really helped me. http://childreninthecorn.blogspot.com/2008/01/basic-bread-recipe.html Good Luck! :)

Well, me and SS husband butchered 5 birds today

Congrats to you! There definitely is something empowering about the whole process, isn't there? I find that you really work on wasting less of the meat/carcass too if you've raised/slaughtered your own. It completely changes your relationship with your food. Good for you! :)
