    Sorghum

I've tried sorghum, a grain type, though I don't think it came with a variety name. It was hugely productive. Produced an incredible volume of grain.

Happy to have found this site. Hello everyone.

Main focus is tomatoes, peppers, peas and beans. But there are also some miscellaneous nightshades, flowers, fruits, etc. Hoping some day for a root cellar to do biennial root crop seeds and potatoes.

Happy to have found this site. Hello everyone.

Welcome! How lovely you are turning your home back into a farm. I'm a plant nerd too, totally. I collect heirloom and OP seeds. But I'm quite jelly of everyone's chickens here!

    Hello from Northern Canada

How rare is it to get into those low temperatures? Do you get regular frost at a point in your growing season?

    SS cafe

Me too! 😯 The heat has to be turned on in both house and car. The fall rains are starting too, I'm worried for my maturing pole bean seeds out there. Hope they don't split open. Luckily I've harvested about 3/4 of the garden by this point, so that's the only crop in danger.

    Hello from Northern Canada

When we get to the minus 6 department, in April or May, it is so exhilarating! After those minus double digits for so many months, for any single number we do this:weee:weee:weee My mum told me once that when I was born ('76) the belief at the time among all the mothers was that young babies...

    Hello from Northern Canada

 I get through by wearing a full fledge snowsuit, like a snowmobile outfit, whenever I go out - to sled with the kids, walk the dog, shovel snow. Lots of layers, thick multiple wrapping scarves over a hood, good mitts and wool socks. I have one coat which is very parka like that goes to...

    Hello from Northern Canada

We have TONS of snow! A few years ago there was so much snow that the covered carport we enter to get to the front door of the house required going down a small hill of snow. It was like climbing down a snowbank into an underground tunnel to get into the house. That was wild! But it was a...

    Hello from Northern Canada

That's in Celsius @farmerjan , and it is darn cold!! Yes, winters are long and a chore to get through, especially in February and March. But having had a very hot summer (for us) in the plus 30's, up to 40 C with humidex, I realize I handle cold better than hot. I find it easier to warm up...

Hi everyone! Glad to be here

Welcome @tripletfeb ! I'm new here too! I'm in a similar situation in that zoning in my area limits my having animals, but I have gardens that grow a lot of food, as well as a supply of seeds.

    Hello from Northern Canada

Thanks @Alaskan ! I'm in Northern Ontario, I believe the latitude here is 46. I guess you and I probably have somewhat similar seasons, at least in terms of length of summer and bitterly cold winters. We don't usually go much below -37 though, and I've read parts of Alaska can go into the...
