    Generators

For me, a generator would only be used once a day for an hour or two to keep the freezer cold. I would also use this time to fill the tub with water for the washroom.....other then that we would be ok. We have a 3000 w generator.

    Living without a dryer

We threw our dryer out 5 years ago, save big time on the power bill. We have a clothes line for the spring, summer and fall, and some warmer days in the winter. We also have a line in the basement, it is the same as our clothes line, set up on pulleys and works great. We have a wood furnace in...

Do You Like Where Your At...?

Another vote for Maine...from another New Brunswick. I have lived here most of my life, and love it. The air is clear, the rivers and lakes are not to polluted. I really love it in NB, and it is the same in Maine. I go there often. The people are great, a bit standoffish at first, but not to...

What did you do to save $ today?

Got real lucky yesterday, was talking to a gentleman that owns around 200 acers of ground behind where I live, and he was looking for someone to help clean it up by cutting down the dead trees and cleaning up the downed ones. So far I have over a cord of wood, and it is all hardwood, maple...

Preparing for the short term, not-the-end-of-the world

Some great ideas here, but if you are going to use propane, wood or any other means of heat, especially if you do not normally use them, make sure you have CO2 detectors and fire extinguishers, and know how to operate them, as a safety precaution. Remember for a fire extinguisher use the acronym...

    Totally UNPREPARED

You are ahead of a lot of people...you have a pond (water, stock it with fish), you have a wood stove (have at least one year ahead of wood, safer for burning when it is nice and dry)....is it a cook stove or a heater? Chickens, for eggs and meat... This is quite a start. Look at the unused...

    What do YOU do?

We replaced all the windows, added insulation, and put on a new roof, steel rather then shingles (heavy snow area). We also added a covered deck on the front of the house (screened in for summer, mosquitoes as big as bats here lol) and now are turning part of it into a dining room with a wood...

Miss_The north, thanks for the welcome, looks like a great place. Looking forward to posting and learning here. Wifezilla, we still use the freeze dry method with bedding, works great, my wife decided to get rid of our dryer after it set in the basement for three years and has not been used. I...

Kind of obvious - Hang out your clothes

We use the clothes line spring, summer and fall. In the winter we have a line put up in the basement. We use a furnace for heat and this helps dry the clothes pretty fast.
