Think I need to find some time to disbud the girls this weekend.

Cringe!! I have never done this, seen it done, watched several videos & read up. Not the same. I have a Rhinehart & need to do this year. Needless to say, I have some does with horns. They actually DO tend to bully others more. Yes, true, sadly. Not all but, 2 of them. I hate the thought but, psyching up. With Boers you didn't disbud.

:weee for days you NEED to use up. Hey, take a week! What the heck. Yeah, I can even feel your sickness coming on -- sometime around kidding???

I've already scheduled a vacay day on Friday the 18th and we're closed on the 21st so I've got a 4 day weekend!!! And conveniently - Cameo is due somewhere around that time. But it's little PIA that I want to get buy and do her thing. She's going to be the one that drives me crazy. She's been uddered up for quite a few weeks now...ligs just coming and going like FF's are prone to do. Ugh!

We had sunshine alllllllll day long - it was awesome. Didn't make any difference in the mud level but it sure is good for the mental health!

I've got a pot of chicken soup going. Been wanting some for a couple days so started some this afternoon. It's smelling really good right now! Wish I had a pan of cornbread to go with - but trying to watch the carbs again. Guess I need to get buy and make some low carb bread. Don't really feel like it - but hunger is a good motivator, lol!

Well - POOPER! Texans just lost - and lost baaaaad. Oh well...always next year.

I was all ready to disbud the girls today. DH was running errands so I asked him to pick up some Tetanus Antitoxin for me. Very unusual that I'm out - but it happened. Guess what - no freakin' Tetanus Antitoxin at any feed store in town. I told DH to come on home I'd just put together a Jeffers order and I'd have it in a couple days. Soooo, Jeffers doesn't have it. Checked EVERY OTHER ONLINE supplier that Google could find. There's no TAT to be found in the whole freakin' world it looks like. I'll contact my vet Monday and hope for the best...but what the heck? If I can't find any I've still gotta disbud them. I guess the only thing I can think of is to do it, bandage their head and lock 'em in a stall bedded a foot deep with clean shavings so they don't have any chance of gettin' any mess on their heads. I'm still shaking' my head in disbelief. They'll have some bit of immunity from mom - but not enough to make me comfortable. Hope the vet has some!

That's bizarre! If I had some I would pop it in the mail for you. But I don't! Just CDT. I thought you could use that when you disbud. Shows you what I know.

I generally don't vaccinate a kid with CDT until they're about 6 weeks old. They should have at least passive immunity through colostrum and using an actual vaccine can "compete" with their immunity from mom. I used to know this stuff so much better, lol. Not sure I'm explaining it 100% correctly.

The Tetanus Antitoxin isn't really a 'vaccine.' It is more a preventative that gives protection for about 10 days.

From the NPGA site: Tetanus antitoxin is also recommended in the case of young kids who have not yet received tetanus toxoid and are to undergo disbudding or castration. Tetanus antitoxin provides immediate passive immunity which lasts approximately 7-14 days. If a goat has a deep wound that is slow to heal you may repeat the tetanus antitoxin in 7 days.

So, doesn't the addition negate the CDT shot? I guess it wouldn't matter in kids since they'll get that shortly after anyway.

Do you give anything when you wether?

The TAT won't negate it because its not a true vaccine. I give the same TAT when I wether them... I give TAT anytime I do anything mostly, lol. Even if they've been vaccinated...it's just extra protection.
