Want to come back on this forum after almost two years!

You know, I ought to do that for gifts this year. I made some last spring, and didn't have any vodka to use so I used DH's Makers Mark. Powerful vanilla!:P

    egg safety

Bee, I am glad you spoke up on this. I didn't agree with the consensus here, but knew you would be able to pinpoint the issue. By the way, the Weston A Price newsletter says the feds are pushing for pastured laying chicken farms to be covered, so "to reduce the incidence of salmonella in...

How do you know if a seed product is hybrid?

For your Crimson Sweet, it is now open pollinated. It was a cross between (Miles X Peacock)X Charleston Grey, released for sale in 1963. There seem to be Crimson Sweet "Types" that are hybrid. This info from the Victory Seeds website.

    Organic Agronomical Tips

I like the TV ad--maybe for a mattress?...when the ethnic guy says "Sleep well, my little Love Chickens...........Excuse me,... Love Birds" Edited to add: RE: the word soup comment: I don't mean to criticize anyone who wants to join the forum, no matter what nationality. It is interesting to...

How do you know if a seed product is hybrid?

Maybe it's an older hybrid that is now reproducing true to form? I would think that a true hybrid still has to have two different varieties for parents. What variety and kind of seed are we talking about, sleuth?

How Do Y'all Deal With Pests Without Chemicals?

I don't know from first-hand experience, but I have heard/read that ducks don't do the damage that chickens do. Theoretically, once the garden is up and producing, the chickens wouldn't do much damage, but mine love the tomatoes on the vine, so I have to keep them out if there's anything growing...

    Frustratedearthmother's Journaling Journey

Well, it's not like you had nothing else to do. It's so easy to forget to do preventative stuff. I read up on non-toxic flea control a while back, and I remember this one article saying that a combination of heat and DE works very well. Just heat the flea-infested room, well dusted with DE and...

How much land do you have/need/want?

You don't say where you are, but I was wondering why you want to live in the mountains? Unpopulated areas are unpopulated for a reason. You may be more likely to find land with water on it in the Midwest, in the hills. Not as dramatic as the mountains, but maybe more do-able. It sounds like your...

    Clipping Wings/ Chickens Still Flying?

After I bragged that my chickens never get in the garden with a 4' fence around it, DH told me one of the girls was in the garden today. :/ Gate was closed, and the only way she could have gotten in was to fly in. Fortunately, she was so anxious about being trapped in there, she didn't bother...

    Clipping Wings/ Chickens Still Flying?

Tape weights to their ankles? :D I really don't know what you could do right now, since they are accustomed to hopping over a 4' fence. I have a 4' fence around my garden, which keeps the chickens out, but then a 2' fence keeps them out of one of my flower beds. I'm sure it is a different matter...

    Clipping Wings/ Chickens Still Flying?

Couple of questions about your chickens......well, maybe more than a couple. How old are they and what breed(s)? Sometimes young pullets don't have their adult body weight, and can fly much more easily than they will be able to when they mature a little. I had one that flew with clipped wing...

    Best pressure canner, dehydrator?

I agree, I really dislike mine. Uneven, slow heating, pulsing up and down, way too hard to keep clean. But I have canned on it with my big Presto, and had no problem. I kept my eye on the pressure gauge, but it didn't really cause much of a problem. You just can't go take a nap while it's doing...

    Frustratedearthmother's Journaling Journey

Earthmother, your experiences with your parents remind me of what I am going through with my DH right now. He has been suffering from anxiety and depression for the last 6 months or so, and doesn't want anybody to come to the house, or even talk to him on the phone. He gets anxious if his son...

    Anyone else drink raw milk?

Britesea, maybe your supplier isn't keeping the milk cold enough, or perhaps your fridge needs to be colder. The place I buy my milk from; it is sometimes nearly a week old when I get it. It still lasts two more weeks in the fridge, but it does have to be cold. Also, if I get milk spilled and...
