reminds me of a story of a young man that was traveling through Ireland and went to a pub. He had been teaching himself Gaelic, and noticed a bottle on the shelf with a gaelic name that went all the way across the label. Idly, he started working his way through the word, discarding silent...
perhaps is goes by the fact that it burns so bad going down, it must be good for you? I've never used it, but have read tons of appraisals that say how well it works.
We have a juniper on our propery, and I gather the berries occasionally to make my diy dijon style mustard. I also have a recipe for chicken with juniper berries in it, but somehow have never made it.
I've been working for years on making us as energy-independant as possible. We dry clothes outside in the summer; in winter we have a couple of lines in the utility room (long enough to hold at least one wash load), and I bought a wringer to help with hand washing. Wood stove for heat, and...
nice thing about olive oil lamps is that, if they fall down or get tipped over, the flame tends to extinguish, rather than start a fire like kerosene or other fuels do. Down side is the light is not as bright. I have olive oil lamps ready to use in bedrooms.
After a lifetime of working graveyard and late swing shifts, DH has difficulty falling asleep before midnight and waking up before 8am. We are trying to slowly change our sleeping/waking schedule so that we don't rely as much on artificial lighting.
DH was getting rid of some old eggs that we had stored in pickling lime. Somehow, he managed to spill some of the liquid, when some of the eggs broke in the jar. Some of the chickens moved in and started pecking at the egg mixture that was mixed with the lime. Am I gonna have a bunch of dead...

A trick I learned from a Master Gardener: if you run a line of small christmas lights ( those little ones, red is best for the heat) along the top of the hoop house, it will warm the top just enough to melt the underside of a snowpack and allow it to slide off before it collapses the hoop house.
wow, I didn't think ANYTHING could kill blackberries. DH refuses to let me plant any because they take over. They even broke through a 4" concrete patio in our old house. (and no, it wasn't cracked before they grew through it).
