What did you do to save $ today?

Had a very low-dollar b-day party for my 10-yo girl today--dollar store gift bags, homemade mac and cheese, homemade pudding for dirt cake, lettuce and berries from the garden. And, DH is home building a walk-in cooler from panels he traded labor for, air conditioner and CoolBot, much cheaper...

birds have developed a taste for eggs

I think, though, that some birds eat broken eggs opportunistically and others break them purposely.

Ours are eating eggs like crazy, too. :(

    Is it really that hard?

That sounds like a LOT to me, but we have our own dairy, meat and wheat, plus a ton of our own fruits and veggies, so I imagine that would raise our bill quite a bit if we had to buy that all...

Ever wonder what is in your shampoo?

Help- Family is sick of the same 10 things for supper

We're pretty boring here, as summer is too hectic for much cooking, so here are my fast summer meals: toast with eggs, salad omelettes quiche with Swiss chard and kale taco meat with 1/3 beans and 1/3 brown rice, served over lettuce for salad pan-fried burgers with salad roasted chicken with...

To stay home or not to stay home***I DID IT**

When I was pregnant with #1, I went back to school for medical transcription, which I did from home the next 10 years. Then I was asked to work at the clinic instead, almost 3 years now. I'm currently doing CSA vegetable farming (6th year) and aim to be done at my clinic job and strictly working...

    Farmer's Markets

Definitely check on the rules. In WI, you need to have a certified kitchen to sell baked goods or sprouts. I do well on beautiful lettuce greens and spinach here, plus sunflower sprouts grown on trays with dirt, then cut and washed, boxed in 1/2-pint boxes. Berries always sell well, as well as...

    Ducks

My ducks stayed in an unheated barn last winter, with only fresh water in the waterers--no pool during the winter. They're great and easy! Just whole corn for food last winter.

Neighborhood kids always @ my house

I must have been grouchy when I posted my first response :( I totally agree it is nice to have a haven for other kids who need it. I also pretty vigorously protect our own family time, as it seems that between work and school there is not nearly enough of it. I guess I would just set...

Neighborhood kids always @ my house

Wow--I really feel for you! I would want to be seeing my kids, too, since I don't see them all day! I don't understand parents like this... And it is seriously inconsiderate, unless they've called you and asked if it's okay. I truly cannot understand how people feel okay doing this.

    Tomatoe Questions

My absolute all-around favorite is Amish Paste. Then, Green Zebra for fresh eating, Aunt Ruby's German Green (huge and sweet) for all around, Gold Medal (orange), Powers (yellow), Oregon Spring (early), Oxheart and many more.

    Tomatoes from seed?

Absolutely on the fans! Not only does it help prevent disease and damping off, it preps them for outdoor life. Another note: Be sure to "harden them off" before planting outside. This is just a gradual exposure of the plants to outdoor life. I start with 2 hours outside in the shade the first...

    Startin Seeds Indoors

Either light or dark is fine. Some of mine are started in the greenhouse in full light, others I start in my germination chamber (dark) until they've just sprouted a tiny bit, then immediately into full light so they don't get leggy. Good luck!

how big of a house do you need?

Our kids' rooms are bigger than they need to be, but to have what we wanted on the main floor (living room, kitchen, eating room, mudroom, main bath/bedroom), it makes the upstairs bigger than it needs to be (kids' rooms and loft). Our kitchen is only 9x9, but it keeps me from buying kitchen...

how big of a house do you need?

We have 1900 sf, which is more than enough. We do have a nice-sized pantry in the kitchen, a full basement and a large storage area underneath the front porch (in the basement). This is all far more than enough room for our family of 4.

    Tomatoes from seed?

Tomatoes are extremely easy to grow from seed. Give them warmth and close light (1-3" above top of plant or soil) and enough room to grow their roots. Even volunteer tomatoes do great!
