    Canning Jars

That was to be my next post. I'd be more than happy to give them to someone. I know I'll never use them all. Thanks Gina. All our dry goods are vacuum packed. I thought about filling a few with the wheat we have but our machine only has the attachment for reg. mouth jars. These are wide mouth...

    Canning Jars

I went to another auction on Saturday and picked picked up another batch of jars (74). A mixed lot of qt, and pt. , wide and reg. mouth. $5.00. Also in the lot were 25 - 1/2 gallon jars. They won't fit in either of my canners ( not that I'd want to can that much of anything in one jar) so I'm...

How do YOU can meat/broth/soups and other non-acid foods?

I'm the same way. I figure if I eat something that was left on the counter or the stove all day or overnight, and it started to develop a little bacteria, that gives my body a way to recognize it in small amounts and fight it off quicker if I get a large dose without realizing it. A lot of...

How do YOU can meat/broth/soups and other non-acid foods?

We have a friend who uses a BWB for everything. She has done it this way her whole life as did her mother. So I thought, OK why not try? I tried to can some leftover beef stew and chicken corn soup this past summer in a BWB. I did 3 pints of each. I had the food boiling before I put it in the...

    HEAT-HEAT--Ugh!

I cleaned the chimney on Monday and built our first fire Tuesday night. We're looking at a cold rain for the next 3 days so it looks like we'll need to keep it going for awhile.

    Fencing for Goats

Same here. 5 strand electric, 5' high and the goats could care less. They just step right through and laugh at us. We picked up 11 rolls of 4' tall woven wire at an auction this summer and we're going to see if that works.

Get Ready For Higher Fuel Bills and More

I don't think I need to worry to much... yet. We're a couple miles from any development and most of the folks near us burn wood. :)

Mattel Gets a Pass on new lead law

I had a friend that worked at TMI who did the final inspection of the casks that were hauling out the melted fuel from the accident in 1979. He was not allowed to replace a burned out light bulb in his office because it was a "union job" I worked for a large corp. that had a tree and lawn care...

I know that people will survive but.... (a whine)

I was going to skip this debate buuut..... I grew up with a group of aunts and uncles that would have to be considered lifetime alcoholics. This includes my dad. I couldn't tell you how many times he had to be brought home by someone else, including the cops, or drove home without...

    New Additions

The Banty's are at it again. Came home from dinner last night and heard peeping in the back yard. Went out this morning to find 8 new peeps. Not as good a hatching as last time. There are 14 unhatched eggs. I guess the new roo isn't quite as, uh,... busy as the one we lost back in July...
