Half of my garden is covered in Morning Glory. The flowers are purple though. I dug that garden up from field 3 years ago & have never planted Morning Glory seeds so it must be wild. I will try to post a picture later so you can see if it's the right stuff.......
This was sort of the approach I took. First I made a list of things I need if say, a bomb fell and I had to live in the basement for a week or so, (crank flashlight, water, food that doesn't require cooking, blankets, potassium iodide, etc.)
Second I walked through the house and made a list of...
I've got a couple of those....... they are bantam chickens, probably crosses between Japanese (grey feet) and American games or old english games. They are fine to put in with your bigger chickens, you'll find they end up much higher in the pecking order than you'd think.
Fiesty little things...
It's sad to see how people try to take advantage of you when you're down.
When I was unemployed, I put my pickup for sale at $4000.
One guy came to look at it and despite the fact that I told him three times what I wanted for it, he showed up with $2000 in cash. I sent him away but I overheard...
I take the 'cheapie' way out with my cookbooks. I just photocopy my favorite recipes out of the books & put them in a binder. That way I have all my favorites in one place and the books stay nice & clean. It's nice to have a binder to look through where every recipe in it is one I like!
Fun story.
Probably in turkeys you plan to eat it may be fine as they are processed at a fairly young age. I would think that long term it may not be a good idea because the turkey's bone structure may not be able to support that kind of weight and there are most likely nutrients that turkeys...
Thanks for all the ideas everyone! I have many more options than I thought.....
Will probably scout around Home Depot (which is always a danger, so many cool things).
Here's the existing path. It is broken all to bits. The concrete is only about an inch thick, so it should be easy to remove:
I'd like to put some type of paver down, maybe with a nice pattern, but I don't own the kind of tools necessary to cut them up.
Would also be nice to put something in...
I've been converting my electric kitchen gadgets to manual so if the electric goes out, I can still cook.
Big concern was the morning coffee. I already have a manual grinder for the beans, but I discovered it doesn't grind fine enough for a drip coffee maker, but would be perfect for a French...
This may sound silly, but I stand in two big buckets when I shower, then carry the water out to the garden. (After getting dressed!) The soil filters out the soap and there are no adverse effects on the plants.
There is also a big metal tub under the outdoor spigot, every time I change the...
My first response is "Shut off the main on the panel." That'll do it for sure.
Now I'll quit gooofing off & try to be actually helpful......
Roof: I'd trade my metal roof for shingles in a heartbeat. Provided the shingles are in good shape, why would rainwater not work in the garden just as...
I love the thought of SS, but will never attain it......I'm only one person and can't do it all. (Plus I'm old & tired.)
I've got frugality down to a science though, and am slowly learning skills that will carry me through a SHTF scenario.
One of the great things about living in the sticks by...
Some healthy food really DOES taste bad.
I refuse to eat whole wheat bread, tempeh is pretty awful and I would rather shoot my own foot than eat turnip greens.
But, I see what you're saying. Putting down healthy food to promote junk makes it that much harder to get some people to see that what...
Blackbird,
I had a friend cut a hole for me with a sawsall. The window fit nicely in between two beams, so I just had to nail it in. Unfortunately, the beams aren't straight, so the window is a bit crooked on the outside, but I can live with that.
What I couldn't live with was the goats. I...
Wow! It's been a while! Didn't realize how busy I would be.
Latest project: make the barn look pretty with a minimum of cash.
Before:
After:
Window & screen dor scavanged, trim from leftover wood. Cost was for the paint. Wagon wheel $3.00 at auction then paint.
It's not going to win any...
Very sad garden this year. In spring everyone planted late because it rained every day & it was too muddy to plow.
Once everything was planted, BLAM! no rain at all and temps in the 90's ......it's like the Gobi deset here now. I've lost a third of the garden to weeds because the ground is like...
I disagree with this part. Taking care of myself means I put no burden on others to do so, and if I have cared for my own needs, I am in a better position to help others.
