    Need Advice

Lots of good ideas, thanks! He is about 65, I think. I just couldn't say anything to his wife about the candy, first because it would just crush her heart and because I live on a road that ends at a dead end where her mom, her sister and one of her married daughters all live in houses down...

    Need Advice

Thanks everyone. It's kinda embarrassing and a little ridiculous... I'm 45 for cryin' out loud, you'd think I could just find a way to deal with it. But my usual way is polite/firm then yelling & door slamming if that doesn't work. This situation requires finesse which is not one of my strong...

    Need Advice

I could use some help diffusing a situation with one of my neighbors...... My closest neighbor (about 1/4 mile away) is an older married gentleman. He has been unbelievably helpful to me, teaching me about tractors & farming and takes care of my chickens when I have to go away for a few days. I...

    grow your own wheat

FD, what method do you use to get the seeds out of the pods and get the pod bits out of the seed? I grew mustard seeds last year and let them dry in the pod. I began splitting the pods by hand. It takes way too much time & nothing I've tried can get all the pod bits out of the seed.....

Ohiofarmgirl'sAdventuresinTheGoodLand-where ya been? whatcha been doin

Funny story! Weird how some people have a built in animal repellant, I have a friend who visits every few months and every bird on the property wants to kill him, even the cats who are complete 'attention ho's' avoid him like the plague. But no creature is as fearsome as the...

    Chicken help needed!

I'm not trying to get anyone angry or hurt any feelings, but please, please it's Starter Fluid not lighter fluid Starter fluid is ether, lighter fluid will burn her eyes & lungs. I use starter fluid to put down chicks (usung cotton balls over the nostrils) and I've used a spackle bucket (with...

What are you doing this weekend?!

I've been debating for an hour whether to go to an auction or stay home. It's flurrying at the moment, they are not going to cancel the auction due to weather, but do I want to stand out in the snow & cold on the off chance I'll find something very cool, very cheap?

    Removing snow from roof

Thanks for the offer, but I'm pretty sure the back part of the house was added on by the 'do-it-yourself-even if-you-have-no-clue' original owner. Certain sections I'm convinced are still standing out of sheer habit. You can see what happens here is that it slides down from the...

    Removing snow from roof

Well, I don't actually live in the north, but I am trusting that the roof will hold, that's why I'm NOT going up there and do all the stick poking from the ground, mainly to give the rain gutters some relief.

Study Links Soda Consumption to Pancreatic Cancer

For a while there I remember study after study coming out stating that _______ (insert substance here) causes cancer in lab rats. Common sense tells you that stuffing any living creature with an overabundance of any one thing will cause it to die of something other than old age. Just seems like...

    Removing snow from roof

Great idea to get all that snow off the roof especially if it's flat. I have a metal roof and even though the snow hangs up on the back part of the house, there is no way my brittle old butt is going up on what is in actuality a giant slippery sliding board with a cliff at the bottom. I just...

Study Links Soda Consumption to Pancreatic Cancer

To expand on Dace's suggestion above..... Evaporated cane juice is often called Rapadura. Good stuff. It has a slight molasses taste, but easy to get used to. I use it in recipes that just don't turn out well using honey, to carmelize onions and for guests who want sugar in their coffee or tea.

    wide scale preparations scenario

Even if you were already completely self sufficient, you would have to spend all your time defending your property from the people who want to steal your food. Sad, but true.

Meriruka's Tales - need advice on squash

The table was a gift from my Dad when I got my first house. I was using a card table up until then. I've often thought of selling it, because let's face it, I'm hardly going to have formal dinner parties here :) Anyone that comes over, we hang out in the kitchen even though there's a perfectly...

Meriruka's Tales - need advice on squash

Aha! See? I'm not the only one. Apparently in this particular spot on the planet, they DO live in holes they bore into the ground. It's just wrong. Like a trap set for city people. Occamstazer Today 5:53 pm ...it chased me into the river and took my whole sandwich. I'm sorry you were scared...

Cream cheese - your favorite way to use it?

You could put some in the scrambled eggs, it gives them a nice creamy flavor or slather some on strips of smoked salmon and roll them up.

Meriruka's Tales - need advice on squash

Occamstazer Today 12:32 pm Gah, now I want some emus. You guys are such enablers. Sneaks up on you doesn't it? First I'm thinking, "Oh. Emus. Cool." Then you look them up and they look like a walking tiki hut. Then you read the funny stories (now including hula hoops) and then somebody posts...

Meriruka's Tales - need advice on squash

Thanks! Old houses do feel more secure. I do envy how well insulated newer houses are and renovating an old house requires the strength of a giant to pull out the foot long nails embedded every two inches, but I still wouldn't trade. Good point about the emus. What do you do with emu chicks...
