    Hello from L.A. (lower Alabama)

We took the boat out weekend before last and although we didn't catch a single fish :( we did see a large pod of dolphin, as well as a large number of marine bird of various types. Nice to meet somebody else from the area.

Anybody have a good recipe for apple butter?

Thanks so much, everybody. I'll be trying some of these. The crock pot idea is wonderful for me since I am currently stuck with an electric stove (rather than gas) that is difficult to keep at a constant temperature, so things tend to scorch on the stove.

That it is. It is also home to an Audobon bird sanctuary. This morning, I was working on the front porch and was treated to visit from a curious hummingbird. I wish I'd had a camera. It was less than 3 feet from me. I've never seen one that close up before.

Anybody have a good recipe for apple butter?

I love apple butter, but all of the store bought brands contain high fructose corn syrup, which I won't eat. I'd like to make my own when apple season arrives down here. Suggestions for a simple but delicious recipe will be much appreciated.

    How are you self reliant?

Here you go, bz. http://www.nwbasketweavers.org/pnbaskets/index.html I didn't use raffia, since it wasn't readily available at a cheap price. I used hemp thread instead, since I had it on hand from some long ago project. Really, I think you could use any sturdy string/thread to do this. My...

    Convection oven saves energy?

We have a large toaster oven that is also a convection oven that heats up to 450 degrees. The best thing about it, is that it is very portable, so in A/C weather, I take it out to the back porch off the kitchen and use it there. That way it doesn't compete with the A/C by heating the house and...

    Hello from L.A. (lower Alabama)

Only by the bad press - pretty much killed the folks in the vacation rental business, despite the fact that the oil never really caused much problem here. What you saw on the news didn't happen in our part of the Gulf too much. We were fairly protected by the currents coming out of Mobile Bay...

    How are you self reliant?

Yep, that's Gus, my five year old "miniature" schnauzer (he's over 22 pounds, not so miniature) and he is the smiliest dog you ever saw.

    How are you self reliant?

Here are some of the ways we are self-sufficient: My husband does all home and auto repairs (including plumbing and electrical work), except those repairs requiring special equipment that he doesn't have (this is rare since he has ever tool you can name). I bake my own bread, make all of our...

Hi, I just found your site and love it!!! My husband and I have recently begun our journey to a more self-sufficient lifestyle, and I am thrilled to find a forum with so many useful tips. We live on an island in the Gulf of Mexico just south of Mobile, Alabama. Since the question is not if...
