i was the same. today it's 45* and i'm running around in a tshirt, short pants, and flip flops and getting all my chicken killing stuff together cause it's "warm enough" to get wet outside...

Jason closes his journal... Thanks!! I love you!!

J, did you watch Edwardian Farm? if not, you would probably really love the blacksmith bit in the last episode (they show him a couple of other times in the series too). i wondered if you had an idea what a weathervane like that, custom-made, would run. i'm guessing quite a bit. edited for clarity

    propane vs. solar appliances

i'm just worried about the house getting too hot if i'm using the wood stove in summer. i guess if i just use it judiciously it won't be a problem.

    propane vs. solar appliances

don't be sorry. i'm glad i got to read the first version because it actually gave me more things to think about. it's easy to forget things that you HAVE to consider because in a "normal" house they are so hidden and you don't think about them. for the past few days i've been jotting down what...

    propane vs. solar appliances

the only things that would be going up in the loft would be some bookshelves (built in) and a futon type sitting/sleeping arrangement. the loft will basically be a reading room and extra guest bed when it's needed. VERY minimal and basic. i was asking about the 45w system because i can get one...

    propane vs. solar appliances

sure didn't measure to the rafters. i think it's about 6 feet at the peak. i really just threw the stairs in to see how it would break the room up. it's much more likely that, if the loft happens, the stairs will be much more ladder like.

    propane vs. solar appliances

thanks animalfarm! great points. i'd really rather not have to bring in outside fuel but i know i can't afford a huge solar array. i'm HEAVILY leaning towards a wood stove for many many reasons. ok, here is my "I should know that" question about solar charged battery arrays: when a solar panel...

the hovel i want to call home

yeah, for now i've just got myself to wash for. hopefully that won't be the case for TOO much longer though. ;) 3000 acres is seriously massive. i've lived here most my life and there are places i've never been (mostly because they are hard to get to). we've just been fortunate enough to keep...

the hovel i want to call home

the whole farm is a bit under 3000 acres, but, as you can see, the VAST majority of that is forest on the side of a mountain. if you wanted a family compound with plenty of room for privacy and actual farming, plus a bit of wooded area to enjoy), i think 200-300 acres would be my perfect ideal...

the hovel i want to call home

here's the layout i've worked up. i took the measurements myself so they aren't perfect, but they are close. the house is about 27ft by 27ft, which is 729 sqft. 3D view in these, i've added a new wall in the right side room to create the little bedroom in what is now just an open room. i've...

    propane vs. solar appliances

here's the layout i've been working on. it's ALMOST to scale: i took the measurements by myself so i did the best i could with a tape measure that wanted to wiggle and roll. it's about 27ft x 27ft, which is 729 sqft. 3D view everything is shown as it is now except that i've added a wall in...

    propane vs. solar appliances

good to hear about the propane camper refrigerator! that is sounding better and better. as for the cook stove, this is the one i was looking at and it claims to heat 1500 sqft. the house i'm contemplating remodeling is under 800 and it already has a fireplace in the main room. do you think that...

    propane vs. solar appliances

does anyone have experience with either of these? from what i've calculated, a 45w solar array would provide plenty of power for the VERY limited usage i'm anticipating if i go forward with my house remodel project (basically a few lights, limited tv, and laptop charging). EXCEPT, of course, for...

Edwardian Farm - Update post 1!

after watching the whole first season of Land Girls, i would say don't rush to watch it if you are looking for a companion to Victorian or Edwardian Farm. they "farm" for about 5 mins each episode and it all seems to be them digging in one potato field... it's not a bad show if you just want to...

my Ollie used to sleep in the bathroom sink all the time. it was very strange. my favorite dirty dish excuse is "Well the dishwasher is full so i put them in the sink." yes, the dishwasher is full of CLEAN dishes, which you are welcome to put away.

Edwardian Farm - Update post 1!

just discovered another BBC show (not a documentary type though) set during WWII called Land Girls, about 4 girls in the Women's Land Army. you can get it on Youtube but it has Spanish subtitles (and the clip titles are in Spanish). it's not spectacular and they need a seriously lesson in pacing...

the hovel i want to call home

i know! i'm becoming increasingly obsessed with this project! constantly thinking of all the awesome things i could do: finally get a dairy cow, get some sheeps, build a smokehouse, have my own garden far away from my grandfather's garden (and his nosiness)! the only thing it doesn't have that...
