The wood splitter thing makes me think of my wife's grandparents. They're almost 90, and amazingly still alive and well. Last year, grandma had to go to the doctor for carpal tunnel syndrome. The doctor was asking her, "do you write a lot? or do too much knitting?" and she had to tell him...
Zenbirder- Sounds like you've got great stuff going on! I hope that in the future I'll be able to leap a little further. Part of what I really enjoy here is getting ideas on how to do that. I'm taking small steps at the moment, but it's good to know that larger ones are possible!
Annmarie-...
I don't have a VHS player anymore. Sometimes I think it'd be nice to have one for that reason.... you can get cheap (or free! nice score!) VHS tapes almost anywhere.
And yay for the Dark Crystal!!!
"Wings? I don't have wings!"
"Of course not, you're a boy."
I realize my music ramblings might make me sound sort of snooty, and like, "why is he ON this message board?" So, I figured I'd briefly mention why I'm here.
My wife and I are both artists, and that means we've agreed to live on little money to support our careers in fields that aren't exactly...
Cassandra- HA! I don't think I can possibly convince you with words of her awesomeness, but here are a few reasons why I love her music:
1. She's kind of like watching a huge forest fire burn. Like, she sounds kind of out of control and incredibly dramatic, but the huge burst of color is just...
Well, thanks for being interested! I know it's kind of a weird occupation for this crowd, but hey, I am what I am.
I do a number of different things to piece together a living as a musician. I studied composing for a long time, and get some income by doing that. It's really my big dream...
Okay, I'm diving right in with the MONSTER list! Aaaaaah, it's a monster! Hiiiiiide!
Ahem. Anyway:
01. Name? Scott
02. Gender? Male
03. Disneyworld or Disneyland? No thanks.
04. What is your favorite color? Entirely dependent on the thing to be colored. I drive a bright yellow...
Depends on the charity... where I used to live, the St. Vincent De Paul charity did home pickups for things all the time... used to always see their truck around, taking furniture and such.
I grew up in New Jersey near the ocean, so I have a special weakness in my heart for the delicious, full-flavored goodness of Bluefish. Mmmmmm. I really enjoy the fishy-tasting fish in particular... but I like to eat all fish.
Hey, the image thing suddenly works for me too. Yippee!
Here's a pic from this summer, with me and my little girl sitting on my dad's front porch. I'm kind of scruffy and unshaven, but she's real cute so who cares?
somewhat OT (sorry, I'm all scattered today):
I'm home most days with the little baby, and I've had a great time passing the hours by taking her to the swingset in the local park, walking into town for an ice cream cone, running around with her in a baby carrier thing...
I just don't know what...
OT a bit:
I'm at a small liberal arts college with a big campus-wide initiative to create "sustainability" on campus. To that end, they've gone paperless in a lot of things, hired environmentalists to give talks and training to staff and faculty, etc. Great, right?
But they seem to be...
MrsCountryChick already said it, but when my (former) cat had surgery, he needed gentler stuff than kitty litter, and I used shredded newspaper and scrap paper. It didn't contain the smell as well, but worked quite wonderfully.
It probably takes a lot of trial and error, but I've got a good friend who brews her own beer, and it's just delicious and awesome. As good as any I've had in the store, and homemade! She has a little mini keg in the fridge at most times. Usually, she makes just regular unflavored beers, but...
In my experience, the cheapest way if to find local folks who do it. In the store it's always much more expensive than if you have a friend or co-worker or friend-of-a-friend who makes some.
The pancake thing was nice because it was so darn cheap, but we decorated the heck out of the packaging to make it seem fancy. We made them in "makes enough pancakes for 2" size containers, and covered them in stickers and ribbon and stuff. Also, if you add enough chocolate and cinnamon and...
We jarred some chunky homemade applesauce with good local apples one year, and everyone really liked that.
We also, last year, made silly flavored pancake mixes... I'll admit, we just bought some "just add water" mixes and then added in things to made them fancy and put them in jars. One mix...
I'm willing to bet that lots of these are notes written by the students themselves, pretending to be their parents, and thinking they're all clever and stuff.
Still... HA! HA HA HA!
To me, it's about doing what's best for my family, which usually means either doing things myself, or supporting good local businesses that do things well and with a personal touch. I'm not an old-fashioned guy in general, but I think so many things in our world these days have been changed to...
