    Organizational Techniques for Recipes?

I write down all the categories I want my recipes to fit into. I lay them carefully all over my bed. Then I take a nap on them. When I wake up, magically, I remember them all perfectly, so I never have to bother with writing them down or whatnot. ;) Hmm. In reality they are mostly in a box on...

? about sneaking zucchini into recipes

If your zucchini is fresh you can grate and squeeze it between your hands, just like cucumbers. If it is grated and frozen, a lot of the liquid will separate naturally. I have sucessfully snuck grated zucchini into scrambled eggs, cornbread, pancakes and chili. I am going to try fruit crisp...

Out of curiousity; what forums do you frequent?

ok, as far as I know, there isn't a beekeeping section in any of the 'BYC' sites, so does anyone know of a good one? You can reply in another language, or code if you like. I can hold up my decoder ring to my computer screen and it works just fine.

What SS magazines do you read? Are they worth it?

Thanks Kel - I already have Carla Emory, Back to Basics, Hobby Farm, and the Foxfire books. I love Sue Hubbel, I have read both her books and enjoyed them very much. I also read Backyard Beekeeping over the summer. Actually I have been reading tons of books, old and new about beekeeping as my...

    One Animal??

OK, well someone has to say it...... I would pick sheep. My sheep right now give me nothing but manure and pleasure, but eventually they will give me meat, milk and fiber. Plus they mow my lawn, all my neighbors love them, and they fart and burp a lot in the barn which keeps the chickens warm...

What SS magazines do you read? Are they worth it?

keljonma - thanks for the link, that was helpful. Which of the two beekeeping magazines do you like better? Which would you recommend for a beginner? Anyone know of any good cheesemaking magazines, or old fashioned cooking/ preserving? Or beginning carpentry/plumbing/remodeling magazines?

What to do with old clothes?

The denim is great for making potholders. I go through so many pot holders, that I am constantly making more, and the heavy denim is nice. Also, I have read, but haven't yet tried - if you have the t-shirts with the puffy printing, you can baste them on the back of your rugs, and they will...

    Treasure Hunting?

This spring my dog and I were walking around a lake in Iowa. We met a guy using his metal detector in the water. He showed me some of the stuff he had found that morning. Coins and jewelry mostly. He said he had been doing it as a hobby for the past 20 years or so and was retiring and treasure...

What do ya'll think of communal living?

I don't think communal living necessarily means a commune. Co-housing is pretty popular and seems to be growing. I worked for a family that lived in a co-housing community and it was great. Everyone had their own small house or duplex and they all shared a 'common house' with a laundry room...

    Hubby Hungry Again..........

I am a true leftover lover, so if it tasted good the night before, I tend to think it would be even better the next morning. I love grilled veggies, casseroles, wilted salads, ect. for breakfast. I love cold pancakes. I put all sorts of things on them or in them. They can be refridgerated or...

    Not Happy with SS?

FD, I think you hit the nail on the head. My friends are constantly telling me I am crazy for working so hard, then they turn around and expect free eggs and veggies! NO! I would never ask them to go to work and give me the money, why should they expect free handouts from me? Also, I feel...

Vegetarians Unite...And Make Delicious, Economical And Nutritious Food

People who don't eat 'land meat' but who do eat fish are called Pescatarians. From the Latin piscus. Does anyone have a recipe for kidney and green bean curry with a tomatoe coconut sauce? We had it at a restaraunt, and it was honestly the most delicious food I have ever eaten. I could happily...

    Eat Local?

Lady H - I have read Plenty, and loved it. I especially like the point James makes about how eating locally INCREASED the VARIETY in their diet. He talks about (if I remember this correctly) how there were 30,000 plant food products, and how relying soley on a grocery store causes people to...

    What's the raw milk deal?

I wouldn't say raw milk tastes the same...... it depends on the season, and what they are eating. I started buying raw cow milk in the spring, and it tasted very grassy. I mean really grassy, from someone who had only had store bought milk. When the farmer turned his cows out into a different...

    Canning....

Welcome! I would suggest starting with high acid foods, like pickles or jam. They can be canned in a waterbath, and the high acid is pretty safe anyway. Maybe apple sauce or pie filling, as that is what is in season right now.... here anyway. :) Stews you would probably need to can in a...

25lbs of white rice...what to do with it?

Cooked rice with milk and raisins is good for breakfast. I like it hot or cold. Also, a quiche with rice crust. Mix 1-2 c cooked rice with 1 egg and 1-2oz grated cheese. Pat it into a grased pie plate. Bake at 425 for maybe 10 minutes or less, until it seems done. Continue as for regular quiche.

    Question about canning potatoes

After reading about punkin canning potatoes, I tried it, and they turned out just fine. They were definately cooked, but not mushy. I think they are great for slicing up with scrambled eggs for a quick breakfast. I am storing most of my potatoes in my basement, but I still wanted to can a...

    HOw to can pizza sauce?

I made and canned pizza sauce all summer. We have eaten quite a bit of it already, and have been just fine. :) I water bath canned it for about 20-30 minutes, depending on the size. I only did half pints and pints, but I figured it couldn't really be overcooked. I used my fresh tomatoes, and...
