What SS magazines do you read? Are they worth it?

So, there are lots and lots of 'SS type' magazines out there, which ones do you read? Are they worth the cost of the subscription? Do they repeat articles?

I would like to find a good magazines on the following subjects;

Beekeeping
Cheesemaking
Raising Farm Animals (can be species specific)
Construction (beginniers level)
Anything else interesting

My library has a teeny magazine section, most of which is devoted to trashy 'womens' and teen magazines. So I can't 'test drive' magazines.

Personally, I like Mother Earth News. Lately their magezine has become hit or miss though. One issue will totally have my attention, can't put it down, every article is awesome, but then they'll make an issue that seems to be almost completely conservation or some other issues that are just not appealing to me.

Many times you can request things from your local library. Simply approach the information desk and ask to request that they purchase a magazine subscription to whatever it is you liked.

As a teenager, I read the first book in a series, but the library didn't have the second and third books in the trilogy. I brought it up to the information desk and she bought the book via online, right there in front of me. A couple weeks later, both books came in. :)

We are really blessed by a great public library system. 6 years ago we canceled all our magazine subscriptions because we can get these from the library.

Find out if your library is part of a larger system. If they are, you can probably get a better selection of books and magazines through an inter-library system loan.

This site reviews various magazines and websites geared toward sufficiency - it might help you save a $ or two.

I know this isn't promoted as SS, but I like Martha Stewart Living.
I have learned how to do things properly and how a professional would solve certain problems. There is a lot of re purposing and found most every subject discussed on these boards.

I haven't seen how to make that beer/pop can solar heater in the mag but many other useful articles that I have clipped. ;)

I second that, the older mags (if you can find them) are better, IMO. Or the website, where you can find lots of the older articles.
I also second Backwoods Home, Hobby Farm and GRIT. All three have good websites as well.
On the other subjects, I haven't subscribed for any specific magazines as yet, I've been mainly reading online or the specific articles in the above mags that deal with those subjects.

don't pay just scan the internet for articles

I stopped all subscriptions to save money. All is online and easy to access.

just google "country magazines" "ranch magazines" "homestead magazines" and you hit all of them and all are online.

I used to adore Countryside but gave up my subscription because of some pretty nasty articles directed at Christians by Harvey Ussery(sp?) but I'm thinking that I miss the mag very much and may get it again.

My mom and I learned so much that we didn't know from this mag and it seems to have really good info every other issue, so that's not so bad.

They also have an online archive to read but I like referring to old issues and sometimes its hard to find an old subject line.

I read, "Hobby Farms." I like that it's short, so I can read and apply information. First learned about Fainting Goats and the way to make a cold frame from this mag. Plus, I read it cover to cover, so I think it's worth the price. I've gotten leads on books and adverts in it, too.
