I use a silver or white Sharpie paint marker directly on the glass, saw it online a couple of years ago and thought it was a brilliant idea. Wipes right off when you wash the jar, just use one of those green scrubby things. :)
We tweak it a little every year, but for us we just had a good hard think about what/how much/when we eat things and jumped in. It took a couple of years to get the basics right, now we're just cruising each year based on past years. :)
Don't make it too complicated, a lot of the online...
"Green" for us is more about the little things--to use less, buy less, repair rather than replace, buy used if you do need something "new" to you, do everything as local as possible, and be connected to your local community. :)

Pretty prepared, we think. :)
We've weathered a couple of blizzards so far this winter (power has been out a lot, though not for long at any stretch), plus we helped others during the local flood last summer, so we have a pretty good idea how well we'd do in a local natural disaster.

There is one well-documented try at creating a transgenic genetically modified organism (GMO) in the early 90s--many people refer to the "fish tomato" when they talk about how GMO is messing with nature and evil, however the fish tomato never made it to market...
In our family we only buy gifts/toys for the children, we do stocking stuffers for all the adults and older teens so those gifts can't be very big. :)
I always try to do as much home made as possible:
-"gourmet" home-canned things with pretty labels (jam, relish, chutney, pickles, antipasto...
Anyone who wants to test their "survival skills" should head out into the wilderness for a while and see how they get on with what they've chosen to carry on their backs and what you find along the way. The internet can't really teach you anything, especially if you don't ever put what you...
