One step at a time to become self suffient....what's next?

I haven't read all the pages, but one thing to consider is gift-giving at the holidays and birthdays. Homemade is the way to go. Saves money, and they usually appreciate it more. And make the thrift store and flea markets your best friends.

Tired of this healthcare debate- or what I would do

Okay so we just got tossed into the healthcare debate this past week by accident. DH ended up with a large gash about an inch long clear through his lip and up into his mustache, not to mention his dentures broken (long story). We have no health insurance. 1) He is self employed and I am a...

solar powered RV vent roof fans

I agree. Just get one of those spinning ventilator dealies that go up over the roof vent. They blow in the wind and suck out air. I don't know what they are actually called, but they're round with slits cut in them in a spiral shape. BTW- We can run a small DC fan off a charged deep cycle...

peter piper picked a peck of pickled peppers

The Ball Blue book and Putting Food By both have lots of good recipes. I recommend getting a copy of PFB to anybody who cans, freezes, dehydrates or smokes any kind of food. It has info on root cellaring even.

    Just a quick question about canning . . .

As long as the okra did not already sit in the pickling mixture. If it did, then you have diluted it as the salt in the pickle draws moisture out of the okra. Okra doesn't have much liquid though, so you're probably okay.

    Removing tree sap/tar/ etc

DH has discovered that the stuff works well to dry up poison ivy and other itchy rashes. We also use it like that anti-poison ivy product called Tecnu. Rub it all over any areas exposed to ivy, then rinse it off. Neither one of us has had a bad outbreak so far, and we live in a sea of Poison Ivy!

Scrounge any good things lately? I did!

We were driving by a guy's house yesterday just as he was leaving a bunch of stuff on the curb to throw out. Got a Homelite chainsaw!!! FREE. Even if the motor is bad, the bar and chains that came with it are good, and will fit our other saws. That alone is worth about 40 or 50 bucks!

    just a little curious

I save my bacon grease in a little tub, and dunk the dog's biscuits in it occasionally. My mom uses it for cornbread, but I use oil. Old grease makes a very good weed killer. Just pour it in any place you don't want vegetation, like along the edge of the garden fence. It eventually...

How much do you pay for butter?

Well, DH doesn't believe in such things as life insurance! He has been told he has high cholesterol, but chooses to ignore such annoyances. I guess if he croaks, he croaks!!!!

I got a treadle!!!! Any tips?

Hey tanks-- I don't have a DD, so you must be confusing me with someone else!!! And Enjoy-- yep, I've only got two bobbins for it also. The person who had it before me just had the bobbins loaded up with layers of all colors of thread. They just added new colors over the old ones. I...

bee hive in my duck box

Thanks everyone-- I sent an email to a local beekeeping club to see what they suggest... but I'm not able to check private email here at school! I can check at one school, but not the other. Just as an added bit of information, just over the hill about a mile away as the crow flies, the...

I got a treadle!!!! Any tips?

I found a really nice treadle sewing machine at the thrift store! Paid only $40 and it works! The original accessory kit and instruction book came with it also. It's a "Ruby" and it's beautiful! It took me forever to figure out the tension, but I think I've got it down pretty well. I am not...

bee hive in my duck box

So a hive of bees moved into my duck box stuck on a tree, and they appear to be rapidly outgrowing it. I am really glad to have a local hive, right next to my garden no less, but they will not survive the winter in that box. It is totally unprotected from the elements, and surely they will...

How much do you pay for butter?

Margy should be illegal. Then I wouldn't have a choice! I never bake with Margarine. My grandma used to buy those sticks of margarine and mush them all down into a little butter jar she kept on the table. She served bread and "butter" at every meal! I find it pretty funny that on my tub of...

How much do you pay for butter?

I was eating dinner over at a friend's house and he had a tub of margy on the table. It had expired over a year previously, but appeared to be good as new! I'll admit that I buy the plastic tub b/c the DH uses a TON of it. If I bought only butter I bet I'd go broke! There is very little...
