    Mushroom season is here!

Yeah ticks! Be adventurous! Here's somthing to remember if you get confused (which you won't): Morels are always hollow. They have a hollow stem and the top is hollow too. And the "brainy" or "spongy" part has actual divots or holes, not just kinda smooth with bumps. You can tell by the...

People go for mushrooms, who goes for fiddlehead ferns?

I don't think we have fiddleheads here. :(

Mushroom hunting! This is what it is all about! Pix!

Don't be afraid justasnak! Get a good guide book, like the Audubon field guide, or "Edible Wild Mushrooms of North America" by David Fisher, or "All that the rain promises and more.." by David Aurora. There are also guides that are specifically for your area that you might be able to find. OH...

    Mushroom season is here!

We don't have any good boletes in our area. We do morels, puffballs, oysters, chicken of the woods (sulfur shelf), hen of the woods, meadow mushrooms, and shaggy manes. Those are the main ones we can find.

Starting seeds is going to be the death of me.

yep-- some things you should start in pots are tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, kohlrabi, broccoli, eggplants, herbs or even little onion plants. Some people start okra also. Don't bother starting squash, cukes, melons, beans, peas, potatoes (duh), lettuce, spinach and many other greens. I don't...

    Mushroom season is here!

Hey Ticks-- Morels are really easy to identify, and the ones that are kinda similar are easy to distiguish as long as you use your eyes and brain. Morels are not really easy to find though, if you haven't tried it, but once you've got your mushroom goggles on you'll be seeing them everywhere...

    Mushroom season is here!

Time to start hunting your morels! I've heard they're already out in arkansas and missouri. We in Iowa don't have them yet, but they'll be out by next week. I heard a horrible spot of misinformation on NPR the other day. I guess they had a story on morels, and some "toxicologist" sent them...

    WHAT ARE YOU CANNING TODAY?

It's turkey season. Time to put up some meat! Me&thegals--canned turkey comes out about the same as deer, add some cornstarch (or a packet of McCormick gravy mix) and you got some tasty fixins.

Starting seeds is going to be the death of me.

Yeah, I would say never use those stinkin jiffy pots. They themselves either mold, or suck all the moisture out of your growing medium so they mold more! And they don't fall apart in the soil like they say. Did up a grown plant in the fall, and that dumb pot is still there holding a bunch of...

    faith healing

My grandma was supposedly healed of scalding burns when she was 2 years old by someone who could "talk out the burn". This was in Arkansas in the 1910s. She pulled a pan of boiling water off the stove and it poured down her whole body. She never had any burns or scars.

    Home Remedy Dewormer?

Some people swear by Diatomaceous Earth (food grade) added to pet's chow for internal parasites. I've also heard of feeding pumpkin seeds to pigs for worms, but I don't know if dogs would eat them. Our Farm store now carries tape-wormer, along with the other kinds of wormers. Maybe you could...

    Anyone use a solar oven?

Hey all--- I can't fire up the cookstove in the summer to bake, and I have one of those camping ovens that you sit over a burner, but I don't want to use so much gas. Does anyone have/use a solar oven? Do they work very well? Have you tried baked goods like bread?

I have chickens at my back door

You have trained them well. Except now they're going to want to sleep inside til they're big girls. I've got three inside also, but mine are only a week old.

    old root cellars

Okay, so I have a cellar. If you have a stone cellar, it might stay warm enough all winter to be okay. If it is wooden (which mine is) you need to have it insulated, depending on how deep it is. You will probably be okay as far as keeping stuff from freezing. That's the whole point of...

    Using PEE as liquid fertilizer....

Well, as everybody might guess, we "nature pee" at my place, and whereever we go, there's not a bunch of grass or anything growing. So definitely you would have to dilute. You could use it full strength as a weed killer though! Ha.

    Buy/free chickens in Iowa--Found a home!

Yep-- that's the deal. I'm teaching music today. Not really. I know nothing about music except how to listen to it. I ended up finding a home for my birds. I discovered that my neighbor lost all her chickens except one to a varmint a while ago, so they're happy to take a few new ones.

    Buy/free chickens in Iowa--Found a home!

Hi all-- I've got a pair of white/black tailed Japanese Bantams that I am giving away for free if anybody wants them. The rooster isn't show quality by any means, but the hen is real cute and lays about 5 eggs a week. They don't need much space, but they don't like being too confined...

Joining the farmer's market this summer---

Thanks for the info! I never thought of the salad greens til you guys mentioned it. I'm going to be in a small town (9,000 people) and my main competition will be the grocery stores. The market is not especially "hoppin" in this town, so we're not going to be going all-out with lots of stuff...

Joining the farmer's market this summer---

We don't have to have a license for baked goods. We can even sell jam and pickles.

Joining the farmer's market this summer---

Yes, that's another thing we can sell, the baked goods? Do they sell well? I notice that most of the baked goods at the markets I've been to are very expensive. Unfortunately, I cannot bake in the summer on the cookstove. It's too hot. me&thegals-- How much do you sell your salad mix...
