    Lard Rendering update (pics)

I figure on using it for cooking...I am looking forward to making pie crust especially! I did save the cracklins...I used some in our nightly cornbread, and it was delicious. We also snacked on some just plain with salt...but a little bit goes a long way. The rest I shared with the dogs...

    Lard Rendering update (pics)

I thought I'd give everyone who was interested an update on the lard making - in a nutshell, it was a success! The butcher ground the fat for me, so I was ahead there. I started out outdoors with my biggest dutch oven on the grill, put about 1/4" water in the bottom, and started heating it up...

Thanks! well...I did have to buy the cornmeal, and the ingredients. But the tablespoon of honey is from our bees!;) And the soda hubby had was NOT self-sufficient...

    What's for Dinner?

Stuffed green peppers (grown in the garden, stuffed with venison meatloaf from the last of last year's deer), home-grown skillet fried potatos, home-grown creamed corn, home-grown green beans. Cornbread from scratch, home-made applesauce for dessert. :P

    Rendering Lard

LOL...ScottyG, I won't tell your vegie sis... :D But my whole family and my hubby's family all swear by home-rendered lard pie crusts, so I'm eager to try. We picked up our pork today (we found out just how much frozen pork you can stuff into a Prius), and there's a LOT of fat (one pig was a...

    Rendering Lard

We just had two pigs butchered, and for the first time I'm saving the fat to render into lard. The butcher has already ground it for me, too. From what I've gleaned from Grandma and the internet, it's pretty straight forward and simple. But I'm wondering, has anyone else rendered? Any nasty...

    Arkansas

Hey Trudy I'm also in North Central Arkansas, just a spit from the Mo border! Hubby and I are trying to be more self-sufficient on our 20 acres with a huge garden, 2 pigs, 11 chickens, and 4 beehives, as well as the "non-producers" - 3 dogs and 5 cats. :coolsun

What can I do with my Simply Orange bottles.

The larger Simply Orange containers are GREAT for mixing up lemonade, and their squarish shape fits perfectly in our cooler to take to the lake. I also keep one to water my indoor plants. And, like some have mentioned earlier, I put them in the freezer with water to put in the chicken coop or...

    Who here cans??

Been canning all day here! Quarts and quarts of green beans, tomatos, salsa, and relish. This is my first year graduating up to actual canning (even though I'm in my 30's! This is our first year with space for a real garden with surplus produce)...in years past, I was just the "assistant" to...
