Storing small appliances in an unheated area

Now that we have wayyyy downsized, I have several small appliances that I'm going to need to store in our unheated garage for the winter. One of them is my dehydrator, and another is my pressure canner (maybe not technically an 'appliance'). Will the cold have a negative effect on them? I...

    Soaking newly butchered chickens

I know I should leave my chickens to soak in water for at least 24 hours, but there is absolutely not enough room in our fridge for 6 birds. What about keeping them in a cooler full of ice water? Is that safe enough?

    Rash on my ring finger

I've had the ring for about 6 years, and it's always done it, but it's not a constant thing. Thanks for the ideas! I might try the nail polish first before I do anything that will cost money. :)

    Rash on my ring finger

The ring is white gold, and fairly wide. I do try to remember to take it off every night, and it seems when I forget is when it gets really bad.

    Rash on my ring finger

When I get water underneath my engagement ring, I end up with this nasty rash which is a whole bunch of little, kind of itchy bumps. I try to be very careful to take my ring off when I wash my hands, but when I don't, it pops up. Anyone know what it is, and what I can do to fix it? Neosporin...

    Discovery of the Habitat ReStore

Last time I was at Jungle Jim's, that store looked like it was closed down. And my BIL remodeled their kitchen with stuff from the Cinci Restore. Said he saved a ton of money, so we're planning on visiting there when we build our house.

    Your Parents.....and....

I had a wonderfully idyllic childhood. My parents will have been married 40 years this October. 3 siblings, 2 of whom do well for themselves. Brother still lives at home & works part-time after passing the bar & deciding he didn't want to be a lawyer. But that's another story! My mom loved...

Nine items that will probably disappear in our lifetime.

We call our Wal-Mart the Death Star because it sits up on a hill over town. And I swear every time I go in there, a child is screaming it's head off.

Nine items that will probably disappear in our lifetime.

Food for thought! We actually had to get a land line again when we moved because we don't get cell service where we are. Haven't had a land line in 8 years! And I really hate paying the extra money every month because we both still have cell phones, too. :/ I'm with Marianne on the books...

    Medical Marijuana

Sunsaver - that's really interesting! I had no idea! But it doesn't surprise me in the slightest. Any time a useful, cheap product is driven out of existence, you can count on big business to be behind that.

Why we will not use the public school system

Exactly. Public schools can do a lot of good because there ARE a lot of good teachers. Unfortunately, the bigger a district gets, the more bloated they become at the top. Then that's where all the money goes, because of COURSE the people that get paid the most are the ones that work with the...

    Fencing for a goat

Thanks for all the advice! A neighbor suggested "picketing" the goats on a lead. We were planning to bring them in to the barn every night anyway, so we'd be moving them to new scrub daily. Thoughts on this?

    Medical Marijuana

I think we've had this debate here before, but personally, I'm with you Leta. I personally think that, as I am an adult, no one should tell me what I am and am not allowed to put into my own body. That said, I have to be ready to accept the consequences of those actions! Anyway, it does seem...

    Fencing for a goat

Thanks for the tips! He is wethered, but it sounds like boers might not be the way to go. Altho DH keeps insisting we should get meat goats to sell. There's just not a market for it around here.

    Fencing for a goat

We are possibly getting a 7 mo old Boer goat, which we would like to use to browse on the number of brushy areas around our farm. First of all, is this a reasonable expectation for a goat? Also, what kind of fencing would you use for this? I've heard goats are pretty clever, and can figure...

    Dark brown beeswax

No honey left in it, so I'm going to guess it's the propolis then. Oh well. It still burns fine, so I will just make candles for me. :)

    Dark brown beeswax

Does the wax get sticky when it's burnt? I will have to check with DH to see where the wax came from. It's entirely possible that it is older. OFG - Mine is still dark, and I don't think there's any way to strain it out. It's really sticky, which is what makes me think there's propolis in...
