Why we will not use the public school system

I think that a lot of that comes from the idea that taking a test is the end-all-be-all of education. Teachers are graded on how their kids do on a test, which means we are being held responsible for a lot of things out of our control (IE, where they are coming from every day). Even as a...

Why we will not use the public school system

This is a case of the RESPONSIBLE parents who actually DO care and ARE trying to be a part of their child's education being punished for those who have completely sloughed off their responsibilities entirely on the school districts. As a teacher, I have to say that most of the teachers I know...

    Dark brown beeswax

Thanks! I googled it, and it looks like it might be age, but it also could be propolis mixed in with the wax, or it could be 'burnt.' DH made a solar wax melter, and I'm sure the temps inside it got up to 200-250* when the air temps were up around 95 a few weeks ago. Looks like wax can burn...

Saving calendula flowers - now what?

Right now, I have the dried petals steeping in about 1/2 of sweet almond oil. I put in together on Sat & the oil has taken on a pretty orange color already. :)

    Dark brown beeswax

DH has been getting me wax from his hives, but this stuff is really dark and kinda sticky. It kind of seems like there would be honey in it, but it's not separating out like it does with the first-round wax. It works for candles and the hand cream I make, but the color is unappealing for items...

    Ganglion cyst - ouch!

Hmmm, I think I might just see if I can get it to go away on it's own. Almost sounds like the 'cure' is worse than the cyst.

    Ganglion cyst - ouch!

I work on the computer all day, so I know that's exactly what's causing it. And then when I'm done working, I spend an hour or so in the garden. Unfortunately, I can't quit my job, and there's no way I'm giving up the gardening! But I might try Marianne's advice & find some kind of brace to...

    Ganglion cyst - ouch!

I've heard they are called 'Bible cysts" because people use to "fix" them by smashing them with a bible! Not happening!

    Ganglion cyst - ouch!

So it looks like I have a ganglion cyst on my right wrist, and it HURTS! Do you guys have any suggestions for treating it at home? And no, I will not have someone smash it with a book! :D

Sunsaver, Livining Off-Grid In Suburbia- Happy Taconight America!

I'm a sucker for ANYTHING with Audrey or Katharine Hepburn, or Cary Grant! Or Jimmy Stewart, Grace Kelly, Humphrey Bogart.... I could go on & on! Savingdogs - I agree, the snappy dialogue is rarely matched in a modern movie. Oh, I forgot Bette Davis! And no one can keep me on the edge of my...

    An odd question

That commercial drives me crazy! How wasteful!! The one that really kills me is the 'touchless' soap dispenser. If you are WASHING YOUR HANDS, why does it matter if there are germs on the soap dispenser???

    An odd question

I'd heard about that Mythbusters ep, but as gross as it sounds, I wondered what the big deal was. All these years I have been brushing my teeth with a toothbrush that potentially harbors toilet-germs, and I don't seem to have had any ill effects from it...that I know of. But maybe that's the...

    An odd question

Really, how germy is a toilet? OK, I'm not saying I'd be eating lunch in there or anything, but commercials for bathroom cleaners make it seem like a toilet is a nuclear waste dump. I understand that a very effective way to sell a product is through fear, but are any of you guys worried that...

Are you poor? I just gotta get this out....

I've been lucky that my family and friends all appreciate what we're up to out here, so I've never had to deal with negative comments. I think my dad will be very happy when I have a better roof over my head, but he and the others are very much impressed that we are saving up to do it, not...

Berkey water filter - as good as they claim?

DH & I have been talking about buying a Berkey. Does anyone have any feed back on whether or not they actually work as well as they claim? Also, if you like them, what size do you recommend?
