Eat for life is the big one here.
It's not an easy situation, but you can make small changes that may have huge effects. A little less sugar, a little less salt. If he automatically salts his food, omit salt in the preparation. Light syrup in canning. That kind of thing. If he doesn't like...
I always stored bottles with rings on. Simpler that way. I also got people sniping at me that I was Doing It Wrong.
Made no sense to me, until I moved to an area with high humidity. Rings rusted on, even if they were fully dry.
Some habits are very much environmental-- that doesn't make them...
I woke up angry this morning and I'm trying to identify the reason. Lots of things have come up, but the "inner tightwad" comment, while true for me as well, brought another into perspective.
I mentioned that I stripped a friend's garden. Well, I thought it was just going to be me, but her...
I pulled prices from walmart online to make sure it was in range.
We had one family move into our neighborhood, maybe 20 or 25 years ago? The children were fascinated by the vegetables from the garden. They had never seen a carrot, or an onion, or a tomato. When they weren't eating at...
$20 per week budget, assuming an empty kitchen
Week 1, a 10 pound bag of rice and a pound of butter
Week 2, 10 pounds of pasta and a seasoning of your choice (salt is my suggestion)
Week 3, 5 pounds of hamburger. Portion out in 1/2 pound chunks and put in the freezer
Week 4, a 5 pound bag of...
It's not a matter of caring. She's probably online, seeing the hatred, entitlement and demands for ouright theft from obese women with multiple baby daddies who say that they are OWED. When your Walart goes to online ordering only because people are just taking, and stores have armed guards in...
I had enough ripe tomatoes for a batch of tomato puree, two bottles of juice and a bottle of quartered tomatoes. Those funky shaped heirlooms taste good, but they don't bottle very well.
I did that recipe again. Each batch as listed made 3 pints. I increased the vinegar to 1/4 c to bring the acid up and it has a salt amount almost up to fermentation levels. I think I need to decrease the salt on the next batch.
I ran out of pepper, so I did one batch with cumin.
The batch...
I thought the false parasol was an agaricus, until I looked at the gills.
Nope. Then I had to do a spore print and identify it. Green spore print, green gills. They're not always the same color.
The problem with foraged mushrooms here is that the bugs get to them while they're still tiny. I've found agaricus, but the other most common appears to be false parasol, which isn't edible.
Pears are done! I have the opportunity to strip a friends very large garden this week. She sent her girls out a few weeks ago (she's very heavily pregnant) and they told her the bugs got it all, but apparently not. 🤰
I'm hoping for tomatoes.
Everyone needs to do their own research and set their own comfort limits. Many people don't trust home canned food at all, and that's their choice.
We know far more than our ancestors did about the pathogens in food, their life cycles and how to kill them.
With the understanding that no...
From my perspective there's a huge difference between "proven unsafe" and "not sufficiently tested." Most of the old practices were never tested, and people equate that with "unsafe." Not the same thing at all.
