Saving calendula flowers - now what?

A blog I follow recently did a short series on calendula. Here are a couple of posts: http://www.rootsimple.com/2011/07/how-to-make-calendula-oil-infusion.html?m=1 http://www.rootsimple.com/2011/07/making-salves-lip-balms-etc-close-of.html?m=1

Monsanto corn under attack by superbugs

That part freaks me out too. I can see them making sure it doesn't directly kill humans (that would be bad for business, after all), but completely missing the effects on the big picture, like what this does to beneficial intestinal flora in the long term, or how it affects the breakdown of...

Monsanto corn under attack by superbugs

According to the news today, a "superbug" resistant to genetically engineered corn is attacking crops in Iowa. Resistance in weeds is already a problem: And... http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424053111904009304576532742267732046.html...

    Lady Henevere: Year in review

It's close to 100 and we've been under an excessive heat warning all weekend. Everything growing looks droopy and sad. The things that were brown or yellow have become brittle and crunchy. All the small things are drying up and dying; the big ones just look pathetic. The chickens drop their...

    $817,000

Those amounts are staggering. But if that's the bill to an insurance company, keep in mind that the amount is not what the treatment really cost and it's not what the insurance company really paid. Hospitals bill insurance companies massive amounts (you've heard of the $10 aspirin, right?)...

    FDA secret raw milk call

Yep -- looks like they are cracking down on herd shares in California. :barnie

Which blood tests? Update: An incorrect diagnosis :)

I never did make it to the doctor for tests. I'm busy, but more importantly I don't have a doctor here I trust, which really makes me not want to go. But I started taking a multivitamin, extra vitamin C, extra vitamin D, and extra vitamin B12. I feel SO MUCH better. I don't know which of...

    FDA secret raw milk call

Which ones? I have not been keeping up on the news on this topic lately. Regarding Rawsome, the issue there was with licenses, repackaging non-organic food as organic, etc., not the fact that raw dairy is being sold there. Raw milk is available right on the shelf in most health food stores...

    FDA secret raw milk call

This one doesn't make sense to me since raw milk is legal in California, unless they're targeting people selling raw milk without being properly licensed/inspected/whatever. Please forgive me for being preachy for a moment here, but I encourage you all to contact (1) your local raw milk...

Can I get some chicken advice? Update: She's not doing well again

I gave them all a small dose of ivermectin. I hope it works. ACV is going in the water as well. Thanks for all the feedback!

Can I get some chicken advice? Update: She's not doing well again

The temperature here has been pretty steady. They only free range under supervision, because my garden beds aren't fenced. How much ACV do you all use in the water (in a per gallon measurement, perhaps)? Thanks.

    Lady Henevere: Year in review

Yes, I have it in a pot. I put some in a stone planter to try to keep it contained, but it just wouldn't grow there. I suppose I should pull up the pot and make sure the roots aren't going into the soil. Thanks!

    Book Club?

I have it and like it. Lots of the things in there are small scale and simple, which I like. The blender soap recipe was easy and quick, although my family is not thrilled with homemade soap. The book has a bunch of other stuff that I would love to make if I had more time -- lip balm, herb...

Can I get some chicken advice? Update: She's not doing well again

Now the hen is not doing well again. Her face is pale, she's taking it easy, and she's not walking around with the other chickens. I think I'm going to de-worm them in case that's it...I'm not sure what else to do. Yesterday she was in the coop and I thought she was laying an egg; she came...

    Lady Henevere: Year in review

So busy! School starts tomorrow for both kids; I'm looking forward to being back in a regular routine. My hen Princess Laya (as in "laya lotta eggs") is sick. Pale, taking it easy, not walking around with the other chickens. I have never de-wormed them, and I'm thinking I should. I don't...

Rawsome foods raided- owner arrested! Media lies

There may be more to this story than we realize. Some of the products sold at Rawsome may have been conventional products re-packaged and sold as organic.

That's it! No longer playing safe!

Ooh, have fun! My house was "insane asylum white" on every wall when I moved in; now it's all kinds of bold, warm, happy colors and I love it!

Can I get some chicken advice? Update: She's not doing well again

Yesterday she wasn't eating. I let her free range apart from the others and she pecked around in the dirt. But when I offered her tomatoes, yogurt, and BOSS (which they usually love), she wasn't interested. She didn't have trouble breathing. Today she seems better. I gave them tomatoes and...

Can I get some chicken advice? Update: She's not doing well again

My 2-year-old barred rock is standing still, head pulled down close to her body, eyes mostly closed, drinking a lot of water. Her crop feels soft and liquidy; her abdomen feels just the same as the my other barred rock's (I couldn't feel a stuck egg). It's not uncomfortably hot here, and the...

Nicknames - post has nothing to do with being self sufficient LOL

I purposely gave my daughter a name that has many nicknames. It's a long name with several options, like Elizabeth can be Liz, Eliza, Beth, etc. I hated my nickname as a child, and happily changed to my full name as a teenager when I moved to a new school. I suppose I wanted to give her the...
