Do any of you mess with kefir any more?

I second the runny jam! I call them lazy smoothies :) I still use keifer. My daughter and I drink it in smoothies or I use it in place of yogurt for homemade popsicles. It also makes a good dressing when strained through a coffee filter and mixed with herbs and such. We usually go through a...

    kool-aid questions

I had some friends who had a huge stash of kool-aid that they had purchased for cheap after the kool-aid causing death in lab rats scare. They were still drinking those old kool-aid packets in the late nineties. So, yeah I guess they last a long time.

    Heirloom Red Beans?

Does anyone know of any heirloom red bean varieties? I looked in bakercreek catelog and e & r and neither offered any. I would like to plant some as we eat a lot of red beans and rice and baked beans. Any info would be great, thank you!

What are you having for your Christmas meal this year?

 Win-win The past few years we have celebrated Wigilia My husband and his family are 100% polish. It starts at 4:30 about the time it starts to get dark here. And we wait for the first star. We break the opoitek, which is much like a communion wafer. Everyone gets a piece. We go around...

At the first sign of a cold....

If it is just there for sleep inducing properties I bet it would still work without it. Maybe its like a Dayquil vs. Nyquil kind of thing. Give it a shot (pun intended) see what happens. Besides a nice warm bath is usually enough to put me out.

At the first sign of a cold....

Woke up this morning feeling fine. I'm so excited that this worked. I used comb honey too. Although I have never heard of whipped comb honey that sounds like it would have a wonderful texture. Is it literally just whipped or do they do something else to it? I might try whipping my own if that...

At the first sign of a cold....

My MIL gave me a book called "The Herb Book". It is fairly old and she just had it lying around so she let me keep it. I found this tip when you are getting "that tickle in your throat " or " I might be getting a cold feeling." Before bed take a nice hot relaxing bath. Then before you lie down...

    The Bread Thread!

My husband is the same way. I think your right, they are just use to the store bought stuff. I have yet to find a recipe that duplicates "bread" in a bag :) Although I am use to it now and I actually prefer it. Since the recipe makes two loaves sometimes we will eat one fresh. Then I let the...

    The Bread Thread!

I don't have any special bread equipment. I like to do my bread by hand. I usually just shape mine and throw it on a cookie sheet to rise. I like baking bread because you sort of build a relationship with the dough. It's a living thing (the yeast) and there are so many variables that effect it...

    Homemakers- journal of wild domesticity-Demesne

Had this thought tonight...and while it is not profound to any of you. I'm still going to post it. Because even familiar truths still call out to us when read.: Back to basics. That phrase seems to be in vogue right now. What does that mean exactly and why is it becoming so popular? Americans...

Herbal Preparations for Your Kitchen "Pharmacy"

On one of the threads on here someone mentioned that if you have a minor cut you can use a pinch of the "mother" from vinegar. Sorry I guess that isn't exactly herbal? But, still good for a kitchen pharmacy. I'm new to herbs. But, I did try some great teas for health. Anise seeds infused to...
