    ScottyG and some random thoughts

Yeah, at this point, it's WAY beyond the possibility of moving her in with someone. She can't sit up on her own, move on her own, use the facilities, eat, drink, put on clothes, none of it without help... and she says maybe 10 words a day, so quietly you have to bend in to hear her. She has no...

For those of you who make bread....

Also, putting a dish of boiling water in the oven with your bread (on the rack below) will help keep the crust soft, too. Though, honestly, oven-baked bread tends to be crustier than the bread machine type, which cooks really slowly and isn't heated on top.

    ScottyG and some random thoughts

Funny day today... I'm off for my big road trip to move my mom tomorrow, so today was the day to really get stuff done around the house, so I'm not leaving my wife alone with a baby AND a dirty house. Only alone with the baby. Which makes me feel totally guilty, but obviously moving my mom to...

Do you save your bacon fat?

I use it to start bean-y soups if it's around... saute the onions and carrots and whatever in the bacon fat, then add everything else and make soup.

Well, I don't think I ignored the point of your post, and it's in fact something I addressed earlier. Ghettoizing gay marriages by calling them civil unions is not a solution to me. "Separate but equal" has never worked in our country, and I don't think it would work now. Besides, whatever...

    Jelly for nutrition?

I say put whatever you want away in storage, and also store some multivitamin pills, if you're worried about not getting vitamins. I mean, I would think that if I were desperate and needing to eat ANYthing I could, nutrition would be pretty far back in my mind. My mind isn't always very...

I hear you, Ann, but I think you could add a couple words to this sentence and it would still have the same meaning: Just because older people, gay people, and people who plan on not having any children get married (decidedly the minority in society) doesn't take away from the main reason...

    Your Money Spent

YAY for Woodman's! Oh, how I miss it. It's not just cheap, but they have EVERY single food product you could possibly imagine, in stock. And it's worker-owned, so there's no huge overhead for the store, is how they keep their prices low. SIGH. I miss it. Karen, I'm totally not including...

Well, depending on how far back you go, marriage was actually originally mostly a ploy to get rich people and those in power as part of your family. As for the wife herself, well until the late 19th century, husbands had the right to imprison their wives if they didn't like what was said, and...

I think they need to butt out of our personal lives, definitely. Which, to me, means that if a loving couple wants to get married, who is the GOVERNMENT to say no they can't? We're a land of opportunity for everyone, not just for whom the government says so. And we don't base our laws by the...

Karen, What's stopping them is immigration laws. Pretty darn near impossible to get a citizenship in the US these days, and not much easier in France. Also, I hear you when you say "it will always just 'be this way'" but I'm hoping you're not right about that. I imagine this will go down...

Gotcha, annmarie, sorry for the confusion! That last part of your post is the part that needs to be fixed in our country. The federal rights are important ones. And I do see how real civil unions, with all the same benefits as marriage, could be a useful in-between step. But I still feel...

    Your Money Spent

That is AWESOME, Karen. Inspires me to try and do the same. My grocery bill... UGH. Where I used to live, there was an AMAZING grocery store that had everything ever made, and it was super cheap to boot. But I haven't found anything comparable, or even CLOSE, here in Michigan. So my bills...

I don't mean to come off too strong in this, I just have very strong feelings about it. A good half of my closest friends in this world are gay, including my child's godparents, so I have quite intense opinions. Sorry if I get carried away. I think it's great that you are fine with people...

    How to stretch a stew?

Great options posted so far. I also am a fan of tossing it in a casserole dish, topping it with mashed potatoes and cheese (or breadcrumbs) and baking it, like a shepherd's pie kind of thing. Or, if it's not TOO potatoey, tossing it into a casserole with some pasta and parmesan cheese and...

I totally get what you're saying, annmarie, and why it might be a viable solution in the short-term. I'm an idealist, though, and I just don't see it as good enough. I don't want to have to explain to my daughter that everyone used to get married, but when gay people wanted to get married, we...

I don't think the minority OR the majority should decide. I think the courts should decide. Based on what's constitutionally sound, not based on what the majority wants.

I know this is the kind of argument that just can't be won by either of us... but I just can't believe that it could possibly cheapen marriage to let a loving, caring couple dedicate themselves to each other... while drunk people who've never met each other can get married on a whim by an Elvis...
