Finishing 2nd cup and then it's outside. Great weather & so much to do! First full 2 days home in almost 2 months....but, work slowing some, so it'll get back to 50/50 farm/work days soon. 😄 Better go see what to tackle first!

    Penny pinching

If hunting, esp venison due to size/amount of meat, I'm sure you know to vac seal freeze. But you can use a pressure canner if you want to can it. Unless you have a big freezer, canning is efficient & space saving. Plus ready to heat & eat. I'm sure with 5 littles, time is precious. I can a...

    Penny pinching

So, how much land are you working with? Do you have animals beyond the chickens? Are the children old enough to help & teach gardening/farming? What are you "thinking" you want from homesteading? Most of us garden & preserve foods in several ways. Some of us raise livestock, varied types &...

    Penny pinching

:clapUsually pretty good until butcher day. That's the test. It's a long, messy, stinky day 😵‍💫. Prep everything the day before...set up area, tubs, carcass hanging space, trash, equipment and cage birds night before with water, no food. Plan your hand washing, towels, no dogs loose, etc...

What did you do in your garden today?

Real problem I have with garden/weeds/weeding -- I still have a job, so time. Maybe a day that's best to get young weeds is a work day & extends for several. The weeds know & take advantage of me :old 😂 if home 24/7 might do better :idunno I've used cardboard with some success. It helps...

Coffee's Ready, Come and Sit on the Porch

I bought a buck once that had been trained to tie out during the day, since a youngster. Nice if you had a spot to do that & move him around. Great weed & vine eaters 😂

What did you do in your garden today?

Garden not planted here yet. Some colder, later than normal -- & I'm using that as my excuse for my own tardiness 😂 Since I'm in an area with a long season, not really a problem. Hopefully coming weekend will be garden work time.

What did you do in your garden today?

@frustratedearthmother ... Try this... The best companion plants for squash and zucchini include nasturtiums, marigolds, radishes, and herbs like dill or oregano, which deter pests like cucumber beetles and squash bugs.

Coffee's Ready, Come and Sit on the Porch

@Alaskan ... Saw this ''Deltawide swath of Alaska through Monday, covering regions from the Eastern Alaska Range to the Yukon Delta Coast." And the suggested 5' in some places, only 8-12 in others. 😳 Plus the cold is to drop on into upper 48. So blooming trees & young plants will be hit hard...

Sad -- you have too much rain while so many areas are in severe drought. 🙁 Wish it could be shared.

What did you do in your garden today?

I suspect, that with weather extremes, our home gardens may not be the norm. They will still be critical, even if reduced to a few tubs! Across the country there's flooding & drought. With increased fertilizer & gas transport costs, groceries will only be even more expensive. Irrigation for...
