From the L.A. Times, just one more doomsday scenario to add to the list.

"The Ug99 fungus, called stem rust, could wipe out more than 80% of the world's wheat crops as it spreads from Africa, scientists fear. The race is on to breed resistant plants before it reaches the U.S."

A Fungus Among Us

I hope that they get this one figured out, 'cause if I have to eat my burgers without buns, SOMEONE'S GONNA PAY! :D

I haven't eaten more than a bite of two of wheat in 2 years.

Instead of a bun, I use large slices of jicama. It's delicious :D

I'm with k0xxx, I'd rather have a bun! :D

Around here the cropping is 5 year rotation of
1st year: corn
2nd year: soy
3rd year: corn
4th year: soy
5th year: then corn but plant 1/2 to wheat

Guess what year we are on...... yep, year 5....

Oh yes, and if a scientist professes it, we all know it must be true.

Just another reason why we shoudl all grow our own food.

Wheat is one of the few crops that have not been genetically altered.

Guess what I think is going on?

Unfortunately, it would take a lot more land than I have to grow my own wheat. Although Amaranth flowers are pretty. I wonder how many of them it would take to grow some grain from them.

There is a project at UVM to research the old fashioned wheats that used to be grown in VT in colonial times and bring them back to local farmers. VT is big into locally grown:D
