anyone have tips for starting ground cherries and sunberries ?

i started a few seeds and only a couple sprouted , they never got their true leaves and now they are dying off i live in colorado would they sprout if i tried direct sowing them in a raised bed? or would i be better off trying to spout them in a starter mix?thats what they are in now

I haven't grown these yet myself, but hear they are fairly easy to grow, supposed to be similar to growing tomatoes (same family), so it could be your seed if you haven't done anything wrong (under watering, over watering, heat issues etc). I should think a starter mix would be best. Did you literally plant 3 seeds, and 2 come up, as that doesn't sound that bad. I don't know what your weather is like in Colorado, but I know these do want some heat, so that could be the problem and would also indicate whether you could sow directly in your raised bed. In the Uk people tend to grow them in a green house. If you have a decent amount of seed I would plant more than a few for better odds, and could try some outside just for the hell of it. This is my third year growing ground cherries and they have given me more fits than the "finicky" tomatoes I also like. I've had good luck soaking the seeds before I plant them, then I put them in a peat pellet/ soil block and germinate them at about 60 degrees in a tupperware box. As soon as you see green peaking, get the light right over them so they can't stretch out and get spindly on ya! Best of luck. I love them!
