Anyone know if there school uses PLCs???

Our school is asking for official time for them now. Looking to put time in during regular school time.

LMK what you think I have a meeting this week on them.


Yes I have been doing my homework on the prof sites, but I would like some on the ground feedback.

The definition sounds like this is something they should have been doing all along and I had assumed all these years that they had been! If they haven't been doing this, this certainly explains a lot about the type of education that had been offered to my children in our previous school.....poorly organized, ineffectual and downright lazy.

Why are they now formally declaring this type of teaching/performance with a title and a mission statement?

Definition of a PLC

Although there is no universal definition of a PLC (Stoll et al., 2006; Williams, Brien, Sprague, & Sullivan, 2008), the following definitions offer a range of ways to describe a PLC:


An ongoing process through which teachers and administrators work collaboratively to seek and share learning and to act on their learning, their goal being to enhance their effectiveness as professionals for students benefit (Hord, 1997)


A school culture that recognizes and capitalizes on the collective strengths and talents of the staff (Protheroe, 2008).


A strategy to increase student achievement by creating a collaborative school culture focused on learning (Feger & Arruda, 2008).


Team members who regularly collaborate toward continued improvement in meeting learner needs through a shared curricular-focused vision (Reichstetter, 2006).


A group of people sharing and critically interrogating their practice in an ongoing, reflective, collaborative, inclusive learning-oriented and growth-promoting way (McREL, 2003).


Educators committed to working collaboratively in ongoing processes of collective inquiry and action research to achieve better results for the students they serve (DuFour, DuFour, Eaker, & Many, 2006).


An inclusive group of people, motivated by a shared learning vision, who support and work with each other to inquire on their practice and together learn new and better approaches to enhance student learning (Stoll, Bolam, McMahon, Thomas, Wallace, Greenwood et al., 2005).

The first reason we got was because other schools are doing them. Other reason were that they say they never had time for them before or a regular schedule for them.

Public schools are just scary! My DS has "dumbed down" since we placed him back in public school. He went from wanting to be a palaentologist(sp?) to he can't find his shoes.

It might just be the state that we are in, UTC, but I've never been real impressed with WV public schools. Actually, I've been quite disgusted with them and am constantly amazed that they keep demanding pay raises..... for what, I might ask? :/

We have Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) at our school. The biggest challenge with PLCs is that teachers and administrators need time to be able to meet with their PLC, look at data, and actually make plans to use the data to change things at school (implementation/setting Smart Goals, etc.).

It is easier in middle schools and elementary schools to have weekly (or even daily!) team time due to the timing of specials or rotations (elective-type classes). In a high school schedule, it is a lot harder to come up with that time. Some high schools are looking at having separate ninth grade buildings, or keeping the ninth graders on a middle school schedule (mostly core classes and a couple of electives) so that the ninth grade team can meet and be more effective at helping the ninth graders transition to high school.

I love public schools in our area.

They do right by the kids and no one is left behind or fallen thru the cracks. I can't wait for Nicole to hit into our school system here...I know she will shine big!

but the PLC is just another "group" that will mean well, sounds great on paper, but probably won't get anything truly accomplished. Just like many other organization out there.

It sounds like alot of hoopla to me....and yes it should already be happening "in another form" in the school structure I would think.

I think a few basic needs should be addressed before you throw teachers into a "learn more" but with "severe time restraint" situation.

I don't know.....it never is easy is it?
