baking stone substitute

I've been toying with the idea of getting a baking stone, but have a question.

I am assuming they are porous? If so, and since I am very messy when i cook, how hard are they to keep clean? I mean, if I drip melted cheese on it, will it just have to burn off or can you clean them?

I've had my pizza stone for over ten yrs, and it has stains on it from overflowing pizza cheese.
You can scrape of as much as you can, and some burns off.I've never tried to actually wash it, not sure if its recommended or not..Whenit cools off i just scrape it and wipe it with a cloth..
It sure looks used..!The dark stains don't affect anything i've baked on it.
