Is the stainless steel mesh small enough to use for sprouting trays, or to line trays? My biggest issue with the sprouting is when they sit in any water. I haven't yet come up with a good solution that will not grow mold but will allow water to drain completely after the daily rinsing, and that can be disinfected occasionally. Plastic or stainless would be my two preferences. I use buckets right now with holes drilled in them. Not the best for greening up the older sprouts, so I haven't been taking them quite that far....although lately, I've gotten some 1" grass on them. They have that fresh smell, but not quite "new-mown hay" smell. Needs chlorophyll! Mya gobbles them up, without the problems of eating grain. No "dog poops" anymore.
Garden plant season is getting closer here, and I am hoping to snag a few of the trays that the 6-packs are held in at the plant center. They give you the trays to carry your six-packs home, and I will be sure to get the right kind. The holes are too big, (I have one from last year) but I am thinking I can line them with that cheap plastic needlepoint mesh or window screening.
I will still do the soak and rinses for 4-5 days in the buckets for the sake of space, but I hope to sprout to the point of green grass next winter for the health of my dairy goat and laying hens, and maybe even a few treats for the pet goats and any remaining not-in-the-freezer or in-the-canning-jar turkeys, if I can sprout enough.
