It is all about the protein levels. It is still weird to me but a grain contains a certain amount of protein, but let it begin to sprout and the protein level significantly rises. Weird.

Must have something to do with photosynthesis.

Kind of like the miracle of a tree being formed from carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and a few other trace elements.
 
Yes but the protein level rises before the leaf shoot is even up as I understand it. When they "malt" barley the whole thing is just starting to sprout then dried, roasted and ground. If it was photosynthesis those barley grains would have to have been exposed to light, which they are not. I think it is just part of the miracle of life.
 
Youngest boy comes home all excited today and says he might be able to make big money off of just one dozen of my eggs......of course, I have to ask. :rolleyes:

I guess his Ag teacher drove by our house and saw my chickens sitting in an apple tree, solving world issues, and he asked Jon if those were his. It appears that the FFA will be going to a Ham and Egg judging contest in March and teach wanted Jon to enter a dozen of our "farm" eggs. Prizes run from $75 -$200. :P

Of course, the boy who says he "hates those smelly ol' chickens" perks up his ears and comes home with a plan! :gig

He will find out more details later but, for now, I know that the eggs all have to be fresh, uniform shape, size and color. Well, the only gals who are spitting out those kind of beauties right now are the New Hampshire Reds~4 a day. All the others are smaller and not so lovely and perfect. I am getting anywhere from 15-21 eggs per day out of 27 hens.

It will be interesting to see what comes of it. If they do win a prize, I will definitely use that in my marketing. I'm hoping they test them for nutrient content levels and he comes home with the results.

If it makes this lazy child want to do a record book, I'm all for it! :lol:

I have already run into two people who prefer store eggs because country eggs are too "strong" and more than a couple of country people who won't eat brown eggs because they are "stronger" than the white eggs! I'm wondering what these folks' mamas were smokin' during their pregnancies..... :rolleyes:
 
Oh my....that's got to be the best price for a dozen eggs that I've ever heard of! Funny what motivates kids, huh? Definitely sounds like the beginnings of an educational experience to me!!!

Your welcome! I'm sort of wondering about this whole stomach thingy, the bloating, the gagging, etc. It sounds as if she has a laundry list of health problems and I'm sorry you are having to try and sort it out. That can be the most frustrating thing in the world, trying to manage someone else's health! Especially if they won't be compliant with diet, exercise or other health suggestions.

Lots of spouses out there with the same problem. I hope you can get her to a doctor who will give her a good work up on her circulatory and GI systems. She is still pretty young to just throw a pill at everything, but it seems to be what society expects now and most of the doctors will just give the pills instead of trying to help people help themselves. :/

I have LOTS of fearful people in the big city. Won't eat it cause the shell is brown. Won't try it because they are not from a store. Won't eat it because they hate the taste of eggs or the fact that eggs are "BAD" for you.

When I was selling eggs (around 50 layers), I made it a point to educate the folks I worked with and the folks I ran into. I made up a little "fact sheet" about factory eggs and other info like several years back Mother Earth News did a study where home producers were asked to send their eggs for testing at a certain place then information was compiled. Home grown eggs were more nutritious (Omega 3 for example) and often had LESS cholesterol. I have since lost all the info, but it is out there somewhere. Then I had a beginner package - 6 farm fresh eggs, FREE to try. LOTS of people were converted by that. Then I would make muffins or custard pie or other eggy treats to take to work. When people would compliment me on the food - I would always mention how much better a farm fresh egg works in cooking. Even those folks who hate the taste of eggs were converted when they tasted a REAL egg. Soon I could not keep up with requests for MORE eggs.

Another AMAZING thing to me is a woman I work with now. She has 10 hens - "They are so sweet!" - but she actually throws ALL of their eggs away and BUYS STORE eggs to eat! "It is just gross to me to eat their eggs. I feel much safer eating eggs from a store." Can you believe THAT!
 
One more suggestion - about the egg contest - get a judging manual and learn what the judge looks for in eggs. Smooth shell, consistent size, uniform shell color etc..

We entered a beautiful dozen eggs in a 4-H contest years ago. They looked in every way superior to the competition, but we lost a HUGE number of points in the uniform color category - we had six perfectly matched brown eggs and six perfectly matched blue eggs in the box! So don't lose on a technicality.
