Bee~ Journal of then...

Quail try clipping the flight feathers on one wing. Don't clip too far back or you might hit a blood feather. If this is the case you have to pull the bleeding feather out completely. This will be able to keep those renegades from "flying the coop"!

Yes, we clipped the right wings...and those stupid things STILL get over. DH thinks maybe I didn't clip far enough back, so I might try trimming again.

I already have the aviary netting to cover the runs...and it was FREE...lol

Well, kinda have to with our situation! The less something costs, the better!

What breed are the chickens that are escaping?

Some breeds are more prone to flight than others. I bought a quartet of Black Rosecomb Bantams as a kid. When we got them home one hen just flew away! :/ And I mean flew like a crow or something. We searched and searched near AND far and never found her.

My Grandpa used to tease me that I had spent my money on a "homing chicken"!:P

Man, do I wish we were all neighbors!!! Can you imagine what a community it would make? Bartering, helping, sharing info.....it would be like the Amish....but not! :D

Heck, Aly girl could find the bargains for all of us! I seem to miss out on so many because I'm in the wrong place at the right time, ya know? :idunno

HAHAHAH yea, I could just see that! I'd be finding all these deals, and giving what I found to someone else!

Farmfresh, believe it or not, it's my BO's and Speckled Sussex (mostly the Sussex) that are hopping the fence.

Well, broody is still sitting and no peeps! :pop

Experienced more Cult of the Animal today.... The phenomenon of humans who think, just because you keep animals, that you should never eat them for food. I've been watching this for the past couple of years now and never get over being baffled by it.

The comments are stated in a incredulous or even scolding tone:

"You mean you could eat those chickens after you've had them this long?"

Is there a time frame on chickens vs. pets here of which I am unaware? Is it okay if you eat them the first week but not after that? :P

" I can't believe you would kill those pretty chickens!"

If they were ugly, would they be fair game? ;)

"I wouldn't eat my friends!"

And I'm not so lonely that my friends are chickens, dogs, cats or any other animal. And my other "friends" would be a very unappetizing meal, for sure! :sick

"I get my food from the store!"

And everyone knows that animals raised commercially for sale in the store just didn't deserve anyone's "friendship" and, therefore, is palatable for people who don't usually eat their animals. Apparently, since those animals are in the "prison system" , all their normal rights have been forfeit! :P

"I just don't know what to make of you!" (often followed by the tsk!tsk! sound)

Feeling's quite mutual! :D
